Backpacking in Mount Afadjato
🏆 Top pickhike ranked #2
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

Plenty of travelers assume Mount Afadjato is a serious expedition that eats a whole weekend. It isn’t. Ghana’s highest point (885 meters) sits in the Volta Region, in the Agumatsa Range near the Togo border, and the village of Liati Wote below it starts the trail. The round trip is about 4 to 5 kilometers and takes 3 to 4 hours, with a steady climb through shaded farm plots and forest, then a short, steep rocky finish. Cons: it’s hot, the final stretch is slippery after rain, and you need a local guide. Getting there is easy by Ghana standards: a bus to Hohoe, then a shared taxi to Liati Wote. It is shorter and quieter than the Wli Falls walk nearby. I stood on the summit rocks at 7 a.m., shirt soaked, with cool wind drying my neck and the smell of woodsmoke rising from the valley. Worth every drip.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #2 hike in Ghana
What sets this place apart

Mount Afadjato gives you a national high point for a half-day of effort. You can reach the village of Liati Wote from Hohoe by shared taxi in 30 to 45 minutes, so there is no need for a rental car or a tour. Costs stay low: you pay a modest community guide and entry fee (budget roughly GH¢30 to 80), and guesthouses and homestays in the village are simple and inexpensive. The distance is flexible. You can climb to the summit, turn around at a lower viewpoint, or add the short walk to Tagbo Falls in the same morning. The hike also fits a longer route through the Volta Region. Many backpackers pair it with Wli Falls, the monkeys at Tafi Atome and the hills around Ho, then continue to Lake Volta or cross into Togo. The community-run setup means your money goes to the village, and the guides know every bird and butterfly on the trail.

💡 HighlightsPlaces and moments you shouldn't skip

  1. Liati Wote Village: The trail starts among cocoa trees, banana plants and cassava plots, with a community visitor center where you register and meet your guide. You see how the hike supports the village, and the sound of roosters and pounding fufu sets the pace.
  2. Forest Section: Above the farms the trail enters shaded forest where butterflies gather in clearings and birdsong replaces village noise. It is the coolest part of the climb, and your guide can name plants and insects you would walk past alone.
  3. Rocky Final Scramble: The last stretch gets steeper, with loose stone and exposed roots. You use your hands in places. It is short, but it makes the summit feel earned.

  4. Summit Viewpoint: At 885 meters you look over the Volta Region’s green ridges, with the hills of Togo along the horizon on clear mornings. A breeze usually kicks up here, and it is the best place for a snack and photos.
  5. Tagbo Falls: A separate walk of roughly 30 minutes from Liati Wote leads to this modest waterfall in a forest setting, with a pool for cooling off after the climb. It is less dramatic than nearby Wli Falls, but you will probably have it nearly to yourself.
I would pick the summit viewpoint first. The climb is brief, and the view is the best reason to come: it shows how the whole range fits together, and that picture makes every other stop on the trail make sense.

🌤️ When to go?Choosing the right time of year

  • Dry Season (November to March): This is the most reliable window. Days run about 24 to 33°C (75 to 91°F), the rock is grippy and the summit views are widest. December to February brings harmattan dust that can haze the distance.
  • Major Rains (April to July): Expect 22 to 30°C (72 to 86°F), heavy afternoon downpours, slick clay on the path and cloud on the summit. Mornings are often clear enough to climb.
  • Minor Rains (September to October): Showers are shorter, the forest is green and the trail is quieter.
  • Daylight and Crowds: Sunrise is around 6 a.m. and sunset around 6 p.m. all year. Weekends and Ghanaian holidays, especially around Christmas and Easter, bring the most visitors.
  • Prices: Guide and guesthouse rates stay about the same through the year, though transport and rooms in Hohoe cost more

  • Public Transport: From Accra, buses run to Hohoe in about 5 to 6 hours. From Hohoe, shared taxis and tro-tros go to Liati Wote in 30 to 45 minutes. Return rides thin out by late afternoon, so ask the driver about the last one.
  • Guide and Fees: A local guide is required and fees go to the community. Budget roughly GH¢30 to 80 in total.
Major Landmarks:
  • Visitor Center: Registration, guides and basic information.
  • Farm Zone: Cocoa, banana and cassava plots along the lower trail.
  • Forest Belt: Shaded middle section with the most wildlife.
  • Summit Platform: A rocky top with wide views toward Togo.
  • Tagbo Falls: A side trip on a separate path.
Terrain and Scenery: Dirt paths and packed clay on the lower slopes, roots and loose stones higher up, and bare rock near the top. Views open up over ridges and farmland.
Vegetation: Cultivated farmland at the base, then semi-deciduous forest with tall trees and vines, giving way to grass and low scrub near the summit.
Wildlife: Butterflies are the most visible, especially in forest clearings. You may also hear forest birds, see lizards and spot occasional monkeys. Snakes exist but are rarely seen on a busy path.
⚠️ Hiking info can sometimes be outdated or inaccurate. Before you hit the trail, check the latest conditions with locals. If you do spot anything that's off, I'd love to hear from you, so I can update it for fellow travelers.

🛡️ SafetyStaying Safe: What Travelers Should Know

Mount Afadjato is a well-managed community hike, and most problems come from heat and footing rather than serious danger. Go with your guide the whole way. The path can be hard to read where farm tracks cross it, and the guide also knows which sections turn slick after rain. Start early, because the humidity builds fast and the climb is mostly steep. Carry at least 1.5 liters of water per person, wear shoes with real grip rather than flip-flops, and keep your pace slow enough to hold a conversation. The last rocky stretch needs your hands in places, so pack light and keep your phone zipped away. Wet clay is the main hazard, so skip the summit if a storm is rolling in. Wildlife is minor: watch where you step and put your hands only on rock you can see. Wear insect repellent and sunscreen, and pack out your trash.

FAQCommon questions from travelers

The Mount Afadjato hike takes about 3 to 4 hours round trip from Liati Wote, covering roughly 4 to 5 kilometers. Add Tagbo Falls and you are looking at 5 to 6 hours in total. Most hikers start around 6 or 7 a.m. to beat the heat and finish by late morning.
Moderate is the fair rating. The distance is short, but the climb is steady and steep in parts, the humidity is high, and the last stretch to the summit at 885 meters involves rocky scrambling. Most reasonably fit hikers manage it with a few rests. Wet clay after rain makes the trail slippery, so the dry months from November to March are easiest.
Yes, you need to hire a local guide through the community visitor center in Liati Wote, and you register and pay there before starting. Budget roughly GH¢30 to 80 for the guide and entry fees, which support the village. No special government permit is needed beyond that, and you can arrange everything on arrival, though weekends and holidays are busier.
⚠️ Things can change over time, so always validate details locally before you go.

We 💚 feedbackKey takeaways before you go

Mount Afadjato is worth the trip for its easy access to a national high point, plus a morning in a village that actually benefits from your visit. The guide knows every butterfly. The drawback is the heat and humidity, which hit hard even on a short climb. Leave early, carry plenty of water, and plan your ride back before the shared taxis dry up.
