Backpacking in Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary Trail
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

The choice you face is whether to come for a quick morning visit from Hohoe or to sleep in the village and walk twice, because the monkeys are most active early and the forest is cooler then. Tafi Atome sits in Ghana’s Volta Region, about 10 to 15 km from Hohoe, close to the Togo border. The guided loop is short, roughly 1 to 1.5 hours on flat, shaded dirt paths, so it suits anyone. The con is that it is a gentle wildlife walk, not a hike, and the humidity makes your shirt cling within minutes. Shared taxis and tro-tros from Hohoe make it easy, unlike Mount Afadjato’s steep climb or the longer Wli Falls approach. I held a banana in a cupped palm while a mona monkey’s fingers tickled my wrist, and leaf litter crackled overhead as the troop moved through the canopy. That moment alone made the sweaty walk worth it.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #99 hike in Ghana
Why visitors keep coming back

Backpackers go for wildlife you can actually meet. Mona monkeys here are protected by village custom, so they come close, and few places in West Africa offer that without a long trek. The effort is tiny: a flat loop of about an hour gives you canopy, butterflies, birdsong and close monkey encounters. Public transport works, with shared taxis and tro-tros running from Hohoe, so you do not need a private driver. Costs stay low: entry and guide fees are modest (roughly GH₵30 to 80 for foreigners), and village guesthouses and simple meals are cheap. Distances are flexible, since you can add a second walk at dawn or stretch the visit with village time. It also fits a longer Volta route easily. Pair it with Wli Falls, Mount Afadjato and the Hohoe market in a two or three day loop, or use it as a half-day stop on the way to or from Togo.

💡 HighlightsWhat this place is best known for

  1. Mona Monkey Troops: Campbell’s mona monkeys are the star. They are protected by village tradition and used to people, so they approach guides and take bananas from your hand. Watch for the males’ bright blue-gray faces and the loud calls that carry through the forest.
  2. The Sacred Forest Canopy: The loop passes through a small patch of protected forest, with tall trees, vines and filtered green light. It is a cool, humid contrast to the farmland around it, and you can hear the monkeys moving overhead.
  3. Birds and Butterflies: The edge habitat and forest paths are good for birdsong, and butterflies gather in sunny clearings, especially after rain. Ask your guide to point out species, as they know where to look.
  4. Village Culture and Community Story: Tafi Atome is an Ewe village that protects the monkeys

  4. Village Culture and Community Story: Tafi Atome is an Ewe village that protects the monkeys through local belief and a community-run ecotourism project. Walking through the village, you can see how fees from visitors support local projects and guides.
  5. Guide-Led Forest Knowledge: The local guides know the trees, medicinal plants and the monkeys’ daily habits. They explain why the troops move where they do and how the sanctuary operates, adding depth to a short walk.
I would pick the monkey troops first. Few experiences in Ghana put wild primates this close in such a short, easy walk, and a banana in your hand is the moment most visitors talk about afterward.

🌤️ When to go?Weather, crowds, and seasonal trade-offs

  • Dry Season (November to March): The best window for easy walking. Days run about 22 to 35°C (72 to 95°F), with dusty harmattan haze in December and January that softens the light but dulls photos. Sunrise is around 6:15 am and sunset around 6 pm.
  • Main Rains (April to July): The forest is lush and green, but trails turn muddy and afternoon downpours are common. Temperatures sit around 23 to 31°C (73 to 88°F). Crowds are thin and guesthouse rates are easy to negotiate.
  • Short Dry Spell (August): Slightly cooler and drier, with fewer people.
  • Minor Rains (September to October): Humid, with showers, but mornings are often clear.
Go at 7 or 8 am in any season, when monkeys feed and the heat is mild.

  • Village Center: A good place for a cold drink and a look at local life after the walk.
Terrain and Scenery: Packed earth paths, leaf litter, roots and the occasional damp patch. The scenery is a mix of dense forest, farmland edges and open village areas.
Vegetation: Secondary and sacred forest with tall trees, climbers, shrubs and palms, with shade that stays cool even at midday.
Wildlife: Mona monkeys are the main attraction. Expect birds, butterflies, lizards and insects, plus the occasional snake that guides know to avoid.
⚠️ Hiking info can sometimes be outdated or inaccurate. Before you hit the trail, check the latest conditions with locals. If you do spot anything that's off, I'd love to hear from you, so I can update it for fellow travelers.

🛡️ SafetyTraveler Safety Guide

The walk is short, flat and well managed, so serious hazards are rare. Humidity is the main issue, so carry at least 1 liter of water and wear light, breathable clothing. Closed shoes help on roots and damp leaf litter, and mud after rain can be slick. Mosquitoes are active in shaded forest, so use repellent. The monkeys are used to people but remain wild. Do not grab them, hold food above your head, or carry loose snacks and bags that can be snatched. Feed only what your guide allows and keep your hands low and open. Keep your distance from any monkey that seems agitated. Mornings are best for temperature and activity. Bring small cash for fees, because card payments are not available, and confirm your return transport before you go.

FAQCommon questions from travelers

The standard guided walk takes about 1 to 1.5 hours and covers roughly 2 to 3 km of forest and village paths. Most visitors arrive from Hohoe, about 10 to 15 km away, and spend half a morning in total. Staying overnight in the village allows a second walk at dawn, when the monkeys are most active.
Easy. The trail is flat to gently rolling, on packed earth and leaf litter, so any fitness level can manage it. The main challenges are heat and humidity, with temperatures around 22 to 35°C (72 to 95°F), and slippery mud after rain. Bring water, closed shoes and repellent.
A guide is required for the forest walk and is arranged at the sanctuary reception in Tafi Atome village, with no advance booking needed for most visits. Entrance and guide fees are modest, roughly GH₵30 to 80 for foreigners, and are paid in cash. No separate hiking permit is needed beyond these fees, and bananas for feeding the monkeys cost a small extra amount.
⚠️ Things can change over time, so always validate details locally before you go.

We 💚 feedbackFinal thoughts on hiking the Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary Trail

Tafi Atome is worth visiting for the monkeys alone. Having a mona take a banana from your palm in cool, green forest is a simple, memorable moment, and the village guides make it feel personal. The drawback is length: it is a short walk, and getting a ride back from the village can mean waiting, so plan your timing.

✈️ When did I visit Ghana?
Ghana I visited in December 2024, starting in Accra following the coast, then up north to Mole National park to finish in the Volta Region.
