Backpacking in National Theatre of Ghana
👌 Worth visitingattraction ranked #13
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

Sea wind carries grilled fish smoke across the forecourt as I climb the concrete steps, and the building’s swooping, upturned roof, shaped like a ship’s sails, throws a wedge of shade I gladly step into. The National Theatre sits in central Accra, near Independence Square and the Osu and Jamestown edges of the city. It is worn, peeling and rarely crowded. Tickets are cheap, but nothing runs on a fixed schedule, so you may only see the exterior. Still, the Chinese-built 1992 landmark has more character than the mall-style sights elsewhere in Ghana.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #13 attraction in Ghana
What sets this place apart

Backpackers come for the architecture, a 1,500-seat hall built in 1992 with Chinese support, and for its place in Ghanaian performing arts. It is home to the National Dance Company, the National Symphony Orchestra and the National Drama Company, so a show here shows you live Ghanaian culture without a village trip. Plays, highlife nights, drumming and dance recitals appear on the calendar, and the surrounding area offers easy Accra sightseeing. It works as a half-day stop between Independence Arch, Black Star Square and the beaches. Effort is low, since it is a short taxi ride from most hostels, and the price is small compared with the cultural return of a good evening performance.

💡 HighlightsDon't-miss highlights and experiences

  1. The Building’s Sweeping Roof: The curved, upswept form reflects a sailing ship and photographs best in late afternoon light, when the concrete turns warm gold.
  2. The Main Auditorium: The 1,500-seat hall hosts plays, concerts and dance, and its raked seating gives clear sightlines even in cheaper rows.
  3. National Dance Company Performances: Drumming and traditional choreography from Ghana’s regions make this the strongest draw for visitors.
  4. National Symphony Orchestra: Occasional concerts blend classical works with Ghanaian pieces, a mix you will not find in many African capitals.
  5. Highlife and Live Music Nights: Local bands play highlife and contemporary sounds in the forecourt or hall during special events and festivals.

  7. Neighboring Independence Square: Black Star Square and the Independence Arch sit a short walk away, so you can combine landmarks in one outing.
I would pick the dance company performance first. Live drumming in that echoing hall hits your chest in a way photos of the roof cannot.

🌤️ When to go?Best time to visit National Theatre of Ghana

  • Dry Season (November to March): Days run 31 to 34°C (88 to 93°F), with Harmattan haze and dusty skies. Evenings are cooler, and festival and concert activity is highest, so expect fuller houses and slightly higher prices.
  • Main Rainy Season (April to July): Humid, 27 to 31°C (81 to 88°F), with heavy downpours that can flood Accra roads. Crowds thin, and walk-up tickets are easy.
  • Short Dry Spell (August): Cooler at 25 to 28°C (77 to 82°F) and overcast, which makes for comfortable walking around the grounds.
  • Minor Rains (September to October): Showers return, but they are lighter and shorter.
Daylight stays close to 12 hours all year, so book evening shows for the cooler hours.

🛏️ Where to stay?Choosing the right base

Osu is the best area for backpackers, about 10 to 15 minutes by taxi from the theatre. It has the highest concentration of hostels and guesthouses, plus street food, bars and ATMs along Oxford Street, and it feels safe for solo travelers after dark with the usual city caution. Jamestown and the area near Independence Square are closer and more historic, but they offer fewer social options. Labone and Cantonments are quieter, leafier and slightly pricier, suited to travelers who want rest between sightseeing days. Labone and Cantonments are quieter, leafier and slightly pricier, suited to travelers who want rest between sightseeing days. For first-timers, Osu offers the easiest connections: trotro and taxi hail points are everywhere, and it is simple to meet other travelers heading to Cape Coast or Kakum. Choose a place with a secure locker and reliable power, since outages happen.

FAQCommon questions from travelers

Plan on 1 to 2 hours if you only want to see the exterior and take photos, or 3 to 4 hours for a performance. It pairs well with Independence Square and Black Star Gate, both a short walk away. Evening shows usually start around 6 or 7 pm.
It is worth paying if a live performance is on, since tickets typically run US$3 to 20 and you get dance, drama or music in a landmark building. Without an event, there is little to see beyond the exterior, which is often viewable for free. Check the schedule before heading over.
The theatre sits in central Accra near Independence Square, about 10 to 15 minutes by taxi or Bolt from Osu for US$2 to 6. Trotros run along the main roads for under US$1. From Kotoka International Airport, expect 25 to 45 minutes depending on traffic.
⚠️ Things can change over time, so always validate details locally before you go.

We 💚 feedbackKey takeaways before you go

Go for a live show. Dance and drumming under that sweeping roof makes Accra feel tangible, and tickets cost less than a taxi to Cape Coast. The drawback is unpredictability: schedules change, websites lag, and the building shows its age. Check the calendar by phone or at the box office before you commit an evening.

✈️ When did I visit Ghana?
Ghana I visited in December 2024, starting in Accra following the coast, then up north to Mole National park to finish in the Volta Region.
