Forget the idea that Tafi Atome is a wild forest trek: it is a small community-run sacred grove in the Volta Region, about 20 km from Ho, and you will see its monkeys without breaking a sweat. That is the pro. The con is that it offers little hiking, so don’t expect Kakum’s canopy walk or Mole’s savanna safaris. Arrive early and budget for the guide, since delays at the visitor center and cash-only payments catch people out. Bring small notes. I stood under damp, green light while a Mona monkey landed on my shoulder and took a banana from my fingers, its paws dry and light as paper. Dung smell, insect buzz and village drums set the mood. Expect small groups, not crowds.

  • Dry Season (November to March): Easiest for travel. Days run 28 to 34°C (82 to 93°F), mornings are cooler, and dusty Harmattan haze can dim photos. Dirt roads are firm and crowds peak around Christmas, so guesthouse prices may rise slightly.
  • Main Rainy Season (April to July): Showers turn the forest lush and muddy. Temperatures sit around 24 to 31°C (75 to 88°F), the village road can slow transport, and rooms are cheapest.
  • Short Dry Spell (August): Cooler, cloudier and quieter, with 23 to 28°C (73 to 82°F). Good for relaxed visits.
  • Minor Rains (September to October): Humid with afternoon downpours, though the monkeys still appear reliably.
  • Daylight: Roughly 12 hours year-round, with sunrise near 6 am.
Go in the first hours after 7 am, when monkeys are most active and the heat is mild.
