Backpacking in Kalakpa Resource Reserve
👍 Recommendednational park ranked #12
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 28, 2026

Most guides gloss over this, but Kalakpa Resource Reserve is far quieter than you’d expect—sometimes eerily so. You can hike for hours and not see another soul, which is rare in Ghana’s protected areas. Set in the Volta Region, Kalakpa sits southeast of Ho, away from the main tourist circuits. The reserve offers open woodland, rolling hills, and the occasional antelope, but don’t expect elephants or lions—this is a birdwatcher’s park, not a safari blockbuster. Trails are rough and signage is minimal, so navigation takes patience. Entry is cheap, but camping is basic and you’ll need to arrange everything in advance. Compared to Mole or Kakum, Kalakpa feels raw and unpolished—refreshing if you want solitude, frustrating if you crave infrastructure.

🌤️ When to go?Best time to explore Kalakpa Resource Reserve

  • Weather: The dry season from November to March is your best bet. Expect minimal rain, which means trails stay accessible and wildlife is easier to spot. The wet season (April to October) brings heavy rains that can turn paths into mud traps and limit visibility.

  • Temperature: Daytime highs hover around 28-33°C (82-91°F) during the dry months, cooling off slightly at night to 18-22°C (64-72°F). The wet season is warmer and more humid, which can sap your energy faster.

  • Daylight Hours: Ghana’s near-equatorial location means fairly consistent daylight year-round—about 11.5 to 12.5 hours daily. No drastic shifts, so you can plan hikes without worrying about early sunsets.

  • Crowds: Kalakpa is off the beaten path, so crowds are generally light. However, the dry season sees a slight uptick

  • Crowds: Kalakpa is off the beaten path, so crowds are generally light. However, the dry season sees a slight uptick in visitors, especially around holidays, so book accommodations early if you want guaranteed spots.

  • Seasonal Activities: Dry months are prime for game viewing and birdwatching. The wet season brings lush greenery but fewer visible animals, as they disperse and hide.

  • Price Fluctuations: Expect higher prices for lodging and guides during the dry season due to demand. The wet season offers lower rates but comes with the trade-off of tougher conditions.

Pro-tip: Plan your visit for late dry season (February to March) to catch the best balance of weather, wildlife activity, and manageable crowds—this timing saves your energy and wallet for the moments that truly count.
