Backpacking in Menalon Trail
👍 Recommendedhike ranked #7
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated September 21, 2026

Most people hear “Menalon Trail” and picture a single mellow forest stroll; it’s actually a full long-distance route that can kick your legs if you underestimate it. Tucked in Arcadia, in the central Peloponnese, it threads through stone villages, gorge-cut paths, and pine-scented slopes that feel a world away from the islands. The scenery swings fast: monastery-clinging cliffs above the Lousios Gorge, quiet chestnut forests, dry ridges with big mountain views. It’s long if you tackle the whole thing, but you can slice it into day stages; I’ve done it both ways and the cumulative descent pounds more than the climbs. Public transport to Dimitsana or Stemnitsa is workable but slow and patchy, so it rewards planners. Compared with Mount Parnitha or Delphi trails, Menalon feels wilder, less waymarked café-to-café, and much more like “real” mountain walking.

💡 HighlightsEssential experiences to have while hiking the Menalon Trail

  1. Lousios Gorge and its cliff-perched monasteries — A narrow, dramatic gorge with small Byzantine monasteries clinging to the cliffs and footpaths that drop down to the river. The mix of rushing water, shaded rock walls and centuries-old stonework gives a mood you don’t get on ordinary forest hikes; great for photography and for a quiet break by the water. (Personal favorite)
  2. Dimitsana and the Open-Air Water Power Museum — A properly travel-worn mountain village built from local stone, famous for its old watermills and the museum that shows how the river powered local life and industry. It’s cultural history you can walk through — wooden mechanisms, millraces, and the smell of wet stone — not just another “cute village” stop.
  3. Stemnitsa’s silversmithing quarter — A compact, traditional village

  3. Stemnitsa’s silversmithing quarter — A compact, traditional village where silversmith workshops still operate; you’ll see artisan shops, old fountains and laneways of tidy stone houses. It’s one of the best places on the trail to pick up a real local handicraft and watch makers at work.
  4. Mainalon (Menalon) forests and summit panoramas — Thick Greek firs, high meadows and open ridgelines that suddenly give way to long views over Arcadia. The contrast — dense, cool woodland one hour and broad, sunlit panoramas the next — is a signature feature that makes the trail feel varied and surprisingly alpine for the Peloponnese.
  5. Old stone bridges, springs and mountain streams — Scattered across the route are graceful arched bridges, clear springs and tiny waterfalls that mark old shepherd and trade routes. They’re small-scale highlights you stumble on between villages; perfect places to rest, refill water and feel like you’ve stepped back into rural Greece.
