Backpacking in Meteora Monasteries Trail
🌟 Highlighthike ranked #5
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated July 30, 2026

You have to choose in Meteora: do you ride a tour bus from monastery to monastery, or do you hike the old footpaths that monks and villagers actually used? That choice decides whether Meteora is a photo stop… or a full-body experience. The Meteora Monasteries Trail sits above the town of Kalambaka and the village of Kastraki in central Greece, a tight cluster of sandstone towers punched up from the Thessalian plain. The hike itself is short-to-moderate, a few hours of steady climbing on stone steps, forest paths, and dusty switchbacks, with jaw-dropping cliffs and hanging monasteries appearing and disappearing between trees. It’s easy to reach the trailheads on foot or by local bus, which makes it far more accessible than many Greek mountain routes, but also busier. Compared to wilder Greek hikes like Olympus or Zagori, Meteora is less remote, less committing, but visually louder and more surreal.

  • Great Meteoron Monastery — The biggest and most atmospheric of the bunch: centuries-old frescoes, museum rooms, and a hefty dose of history squeezed on top of the largest rock. Hike up here for the scale — the cliffs, the monastery complex, and the view over Kalambaka all remind you why this place exists where it does.
  • Holy Trinity (Agia Triada) — The classic “how did they build that?” monastery perched on a lone, skinny pillar. The climb is steeper and a bit more rugged than the others, but the solitude and the 360° views from that isolated spur are my personal favorite — feels cinematic and a little humbling.
  • Rousanou Monastery — Small, intimate and deceptively close-up: Rousanou sits on a thinner rock pillar with a short bridge approach, so you get excellent photo angles of the pillar

  • Sunset/Observation Viewpoint (Kastraki side) — The light here is the main attraction. Walk or sit at the main lookout as the sun drops and the monasteries silhouette against glowing sandstone; those long shadows and color changes are what set Meteora apart from most other trails.
  • The sandstone pillars, trails and wildlife — Not a single building, but the whole geology and ecosystem: towering, weather-sculpted sandstone towers, narrow carved paths and old stone stairways, plus griffon vultures circling overhead and spring wildflowers on the ledges. Those elements together make hiking Meteora feel like walking through a living cathedral carved by wind and time.
