Backpacking in Mount Olympus
🏆 Top pickhike ranked #2
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated September 4, 2026

Most people realize too late that Mount Olympus lets you bag Greece’s most famous peak in a single long weekend, without needing a car or fancy gear. The massif rises above the town of Litochoro in northern Greece, between Thessaloniki and Larisa, and the whole approach feels like walking straight from sea level into myth. The hike itself is a grind: long, steep, and rocky, with knees that complain on the descent and weather that can flip from hot pine forest to cold, clouded ridge in a couple of hours. But the payoff is savage and clean—deep gorges, dense forest, then that lunar summit plateau where the Aegean hangs in the distance. Trains and buses make the trailhead easier to reach than many Greek mountain routes, and compared with nearby Pindus or Pelion hikes, Olympus is busier, more structured, less wild, but far more iconic.

What sets this place apart

Mount Olympus is a backpacker’s playground that packs a punch without draining your wallet. The scenery-to-effort ratio is off the charts. You’ll find yourself surrounded by jagged peaks and lush valleys, all while sweating it out on well-marked trails. The public transport access is a breeze; hop on a bus from Thessaloniki or Athens, and you’re just a few hours away from the trailhead.

What’s even better? You can tailor your hike to your energy levels. Whether you want a quick day hike or a multi-day trek, the options are flexible. The low cost of entry—just a few euros for transport and maybe a small fee for camping—means you can splurge on that first cold beer at the end of the day without guilt.

When you finally reach the summit, the panorama stretches endlessly, and you’ll realize this is why you came. It’s not just a hike; it’s a journey that fits seamlessly into your broader backpacking adventure.

  1. Mytikas (the summit) — Greece’s highest point (about 2,918 m) and the obvious showstopper. The final approach is a short, exposed rock scramble rather than a mellow walk, so you get proper alpine nerves and a massive payoff: 360° views of jagged peaks, deep gorges and the Aegean on a clear day. Personal favorite — nothing beats standing up there after a long push.
  2. Skala and the Stefani ridge — a dramatic skyline of sharp ridges and cathedral-like rock towers. The ridge sections force you to pick lines, feel the rock under your hands and look down steep drops; it’s what makes Olympus feel like a real mountain rather than a hiking trail. Great for photos at dawn or late afternoon light.

  3. Enipeas Gorge — the green, river-carved heart of Olympus. Shaded paths, tumbling streams, neat stone bridges and small waterfalls give a total contrast to the barren upper slopes. It’s the part of the hike where you’ll cool off, hear running water and maybe spot birds and small mammals.
  4. Spilios Agapitos (Refuge A) and the hut life — more than a place to sleep, it’s the social hub on summit day. Food, stubborn weather stories, sunrise pushes and a rugged terrace with one of the best sunset faces on the mountain. Staying here turns a long summit attempt into a proper mountain overnight experience.
  5. Litochoro and the coastal approach — the town and lower trails are worth noting because the contrast is striking: one minute you’re beside the sea and olive groves, a couple hours later you’re under pines heading into wild terrain. That coastal backdrop makes the whole climb feel cinematic and gives you a nice cold beer reward at the end.

  • Seasonal Activities: Spring bursts with wildflowers and flowing streams, while autumn paints the landscape in warm hues. Winter’s snow invites only the hardiest, with ice climbing and mountaineering gear essential.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and transport costs spike in summer. Shoulder seasons offer better deals and more availability, especially in mountain huts and local guesthouses.

Pro-tip: Aim for late May or early October—cool enough to keep your pace steady, quiet enough to hear the mountain breathe, and just right for catching those golden-hour views that make every step worth it.
