Backpacking in Samaria
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

Your first real fork in Lefka Ori is simple but serious: commit to a full Samaria Gorge-through hike with bus logistics and time pressure, or base yourself nearby and cherry-pick shorter routes so you’re not racing daylight and ferry timetables. Lefka Ori National Park sits in western Crete, in the White Mountains above Chania. For backpackers, it’s harsh but rewarding: big limestone massifs, deep gorges, feral goats, and real heat. Trails range from the famous Samaria conveyor belt to quieter routes like Aradena and high ridges that feel almost alpine. Access is decent by bus and tour shuttles, entrance fees are modest, but crowds in peak season are heavy on the main gorge and light elsewhere. Wild camping is restricted and patrolled; budget beds cluster in Omalos and coastal villages. Compared with Olympus or Pindus parks, Lefka Ori is drier, more exposed, less forest drama, more raw rock and sea views—and less forgiving if you misjudge water, sun, or distance.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #99 national park in Greece
What sets this place apart

Lefka Ori National Park attracts backpackers for several solid reasons. Independent exploration is a major draw; the park’s extensive trail network allows you to wander at your own pace. You won’t feel rushed or herded into a group. Budget-conscious travelers appreciate the camping options and nearby hostels that keep costs low without sacrificing comfort. The trail variety caters to all skill levels, from leisurely walks to challenging hikes, ensuring everyone finds their groove. Plus, this park is particularly suited for self-guided travelers. With clear signage and maps, you can confidently navigate without needing a tour. These factors combine to create a rewarding experience that respects both your energy and budget.

💡 HighlightsMust-see experiences and standout moments

  • Samaria Gorge — The classic, long canyon hike that drops from alpine cliffs down to the Libyan Sea. Expect dramatic limestone walls, a ribbon of river, and the chance to spot the kri-kri (Cretan wild goat). It’s busy in summer but for good reason: the scale and payoff (ending at a seaside village) are unbeatable. (Personal favorite.)
  • Imbros Gorge — Shorter and far less crowded than Samaria, Imbros is perfect for a half-day trek. Narrow passages, warm rock underfoot, and quick access from the road make it a great option when you want gorge drama without the marathon.
  • Omalos Plateau — A high, karst plateau dotted with shepherd huts and grazing sheep. Omalos is the jumping-off for many routes, a quiet place to sleep under the stars, and where you feel the mountains’ scale — flat in places,

  • Omalos Plateau — A high, karst plateau dotted with shepherd huts and grazing sheep. Omalos is the jumping-off for many routes, a quiet place to sleep under the stars, and where you feel the mountains’ scale — flat in places, suddenly dropping to sheer gorges.
  • Pachnes and the High Peaks — The White Mountains’ big summits (Pachnes is among the highest). Expect panoramic views of Crete and the sea, alpine terrain, and snow late into spring. Routes can be rough and navigation is needed, but the views repay the effort.
  • Aradena Gorge — A wilder, steeper gorge with a dramatic bridge and fewer hikers. The drop into the gorge and the views back up to the old stone bridge are very photogenic; good for people who like solitude and a bit of scrambling.
  • Wildlife and endemic plants — The park’s star is the kri-kri, but you’ll also find choughs, griffon vultures overhead, and a surprising mix of endemic flowers and orchids in spring. Birdwatchers and plant nerds will find plenty to nerd out over.
  • Mountain refuges and the E4 trails — A network of marked trails (including parts of the E4) and basic mountain huts make multi-day treks doable. The refuges are simple but safe and are great for breaking up long crossings of the massif.

  • Crowds: Summer draws the most visitors, especially in August. Trails and mountain huts fill up, which can sap the solitude many seek here. Shoulder seasons see fewer people, letting you enjoy the rugged landscape in relative peace.
  • Seasonal Activities: Spring brings wildflowers and flowing streams, enhancing the hiking experience. Autumn offers crisp air and clear skies, perfect for photography and longer treks. Winter’s snow opens limited routes but requires technical gear.
  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and transport costs spike in summer, particularly August. Booking ahead is essential. Off-season rates drop significantly, making spring and autumn more budget-friendly without sacrificing access.
Pro-tip: Aim for late April to early June or September to mid-October—this sweet spot balances weather, crowd size, and cost, letting you focus your energy on the trails, not battling heat or crowds.
