Backpacking in Krakatau
👌 Worth visitingfestival ranked #16
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 25, 2026

Most blurbs sell Krakatau Festival as a pure music event, but on the ground it feels more like a regional culture marathon that just happens to have concerts attached. It runs in and around Bandar Lampung, in Lampung Province, southern Sumatra, Indonesia. You get parades, traditional Lampung dances, craft markets, food stalls, and usually a mix of local pop, dangdut, and occasional rock acts. Crowd: mostly Indonesian families and students, with a few curious backpackers. It’s low on polish, high on real-life chaos. Worth it if you like culture first, music second.

  • Traditional music and contemporary fusions — Expect a mix of regional folk ensembles (percussion, wind instruments) alongside modern bands and experimental acts that rework local sounds. The contrast between ancient rhythms and new arrangements gives the festival a unique sonic identity.
  • Marine and eco-activities — The festival often weaves in snorkeling/diving trips, reef talks, beach cleanups and conservation workshops, so you can pair cultural immersion with hands-on nature experiences and see why the ocean matters to the community.
  • Street food, night markets and craft stalls — Food tents and local vendors create a tasty, convivial atmosphere: fresh seafood, regional snacks, coffee and handmade crafts. It’s the best place to try Lampung flavors, haggle for a souvenir and soak up the festival buzz after dark.

🍲 FoodLocal Flavors for Backpackers

At the Krakatau Festival, food is a vibrant celebration of local flavors. Dive into nasi goreng—fried rice that’s a staple, often topped with a fried egg. Don’t miss sate—grilled skewers bursting with marinated goodness. Festival stalls overflow with pisang goreng (fried bananas) and kerupuk (crackers) that crunch with every bite.

For drinks, grab a teh botol (bottled tea) or try es kelapa muda—fresh coconut water served right from the shell.

Be ready to share; it’s part of the experience. Lines can be long, so bring cash—many stalls don’t accept cards. Serving sizes are generous, perfect for sampling a bit of everything. Enjoy the hustle and bustle; it’s all part of the adventure!
