- Shahdad Kaluts (giant yardangs) — wind-sculpted ridges that look like a city of sand and rock. Walk the valleys between the formations at sunrise or sunset when the low light brings out crazy textures and deep shadows. Great for photos and feeling tiny.
- Gandom Beryan (”roasted wheat” plain) — a barren, stony expanse famous for extreme heat; NASA recorded some of the highest ground temperatures here. It’s otherworldly: flat, dark, and almost lunar in scale. Respect the heat and don’t tarry midday.
- Mesr Dunes and the Mesr village approach — a pocket of tall, wind-blown sand dunes near a little settlement. Easy dune climbs, quiet campsites, and the chance to watch shifting sand patterns. Good place to try a short hike or a sunset sand-sprint.
- Salt flats and seasonal playas — white, crusty

- Salt flats and seasonal playas — white, crusty salt pans that open up after the rare rains and sometimes create reflective, mirror-like surfaces. The contrast with nearby dark rock and dunes is striking—bring sunglasses and a camera.
- Desert-adapted wildlife and plants — you won’t see herds, but look for lizards, small rodents, sandgrouse and tough shrubs that survive here. Dawn and dusk are the best times to spot life and watch desert behavior up close.
- Stargazing and night skies — minimal light pollution makes the Lut one of the best places in Iran for the Milky Way and star fields. Pitch a camp, keep the fire small, and enjoy the silence; the sky is the main attraction after dark.
- 4x4 tracks and short hiking routes — most exploration is done by jeep between highlights, but there are plenty of short hikes around the kaluts and dunes. Hiring a local guide is smart for navigation, water planning, and finding the best viewpoints safely.
