Backpacking in Nahal Katlav
👀 For curious travelershike ranked #8
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated September 4, 2026

You have to choose at Nahal Katlav: do you commit to the full creek-bottom grind, scrambling over boulders and roots, or stick to the easier balcony trails above and sacrifice some of the canyon magic. That choice matters, because this isn’t a casual promenade; it’s a real hike in the Judean Hills, southwest of Jerusalem, dropping from Bar Giora toward the Sorek area. The gorge is shady, green, and surprisingly wild for central Israel, with katlav (arbutus) trees twisting over the streambed, but the route can feel slow, rocky, and crowded on weekends. It’s medium in difficulty, a few hours end to end, and public transport to Bar Giora or Nes Harim is decent by Israeli standards, better than many Galilee trails but less straightforward than the classic Ein Gedi circuits.

💡 HighlightsEssential experiences to have while hiking the Nahal Katlav

  • Katlav groves and shady canyon — The trail is named for the katlav trees, and walking under their low, twisting canopy feels different from the open ridgeline hikes nearby. It stays cooler, the light filters through leaves, and the whole canyon has a cozy, green feel that’s great when the sun’s harsh.
  • Seasonal waterfalls and natural pools — After winter rains the little cascades come alive and carve tidy plunge pools. They’re not Niagara, but they’re refreshingly scenic, perfect for dipping feet or cooling off. (Personal favorite — there’s something relaxing about sitting on a warm rock watching the water trickle.)

  • Limestone cliffs and textured rock walls — The canyon’s walls show layers, pockets and honeycomb weathering that are fun to inspect up close and make for dramatic photos. The short scrambles here feel engaging without being technical.
  • Panoramic viewpoints over the Judean hills — Small clearings and escarpments open up onto wide views of the surrounding ridges and valleys. Sunrise or late-afternoon light turns the hills into warm color bands — a simple, rewarding payoff for a short climb.
  • Old terraces, cisterns and pastoral traces — Scattered rock-cut cisterns, old terraces and shepherd paths give the place a lived-in, historical layer. It’s a nice reminder this landscape has been used and tended for generations, and you’ll often find more wildflowers and birds where people once farmed.
