Yurt camps sell dinner, breakfast and a thick pile of felt blankets for roughly 1,500 to 2,000 som a night, so you can leave the tent, stove and food bag in Bishkek and hike with a light pack. Song Kol sits at about 3,016 meters in Naryn Province, central Kyrgyzstan, and you climb toward it from Kochkor over passes near 3,300 meters. The scenery is wide green pasture, grazing horses and a sky that fills with stars after dark. Against that, the road is rough, no public bus reaches the shore, and July nights still drop below freezing. Kochkor is about four hours from Bishkek by marshrutka, then you hire a shared taxi or start walking. Compared with the busy Ala-Kul circuit near Karakol, it is gentler and far emptier. One dawn I stood outside a yurt, boots stiff with frost, tearing hot bread into a bowl of kaymak while a foal nosed my sleeve.

I’d pick the approach over the pass first. Arriving on foot makes the lake feel earned, and the first view from above shows the whole bowl at once, which you never quite get from the shore.
