How to Spend 3 Days in Liechtenstein

By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 1, 2026
This 3-day itinerary is for travelers who want a balanced mix of small-capital culture, hillside villages, and one big alpine hit, moving at a moderate pace with buses and cable cars instead of a rental car. You’ll sleep in two bases, Vaduz and Malbun, so you’re not packing every morning but still cover very different sides of the country.

Day 1: Vaduz - Museums, castle, and the country’s story

Start in Vaduz, which works as your cultural anchor and transit hub. Dive into the Liechtensteinisches Landesmuseum first so you understand how this tiny principality ended up with its own monarchy, currency ties, and mountain farming traditions. Then step into the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein to see how the country punches above its weight in contemporary art, with clean lines and big windows framing the mountains outside. In the afternoon, walk up toward Vaduz Castle for the classic Rhine valley panorama and loop back via Vaduz Cathedral to round out the capital’s compact core before a relaxed evening … read more 👉

In the afternoon, walk up toward Vaduz Castle for the classic Rhine valley panorama and loop back via Vaduz Cathedral to round out the capital’s compact core before a relaxed evening in town.

Day 2: Triesenberg and Malbun - From balcony village to alpine bowl

On day two, ride the bus up to Triesenberg, where the Walser heritage and hillside setting give you a slower, more traditional feel than the capital. Spend a few hours wandering between viewpoints and wooden houses, soaking up the sense that the valley below is a different world. By midday, continue higher into the mountains to reach Malbun, a small resort tucked into a high cirque that becomes your base for the night. The move from Triesenberg to Malbun is short but dramatic: you trade balcony views for a full amphitheater of peaks, with easy access to trails and a cooler, crisp mountain atmosphere that feels like a reset.

Day 3: Malbun to Sareis - Alpine ridge time and return

Use your final day to actually get into the mountains instead of just looking at them. From Malbun, follow the Malbun to Sareis route, either hiking up or using the lift to reach Sareis and then walking the ridge paths for wide-open views into both Liechtenstein and neighboring Austria. This day is about giving yourself enough time to linger at viewpoints, watch the light shift on the peaks, and feel like you’ve properly earned your alpine lunch. In the late afternoon, ride the bus back down from Malbun to Vaduz, where you can grab your bags or squeeze in one last stroll through the compact center before heading out of the country.

For a quiet little extra, slip away to the tiny chapel above Malbun’s main street, where a short uphill wander rewards you with a peaceful bench and a view that most visitors never bother to climb for.

🙋 FAQGood to Know

Liechtenstein is very easy to backpack independently because it’s tiny, safe, and basically one long valley with mountains on both sides. If you’re used to traveling in Switzerland or Austria, it feels similar but calmer, with clear hiking signs, friendly locals, and almost no language barrier if you speak basic German or English. The main challenge for a budget traveler is cost, not logistics, so you save money by staying in nearby Swiss or Austrian towns, day-tripping in, and using supermarkets instead of restaurants.
For most backpackers, one full day is enough to hit the capital, walk a bit of the Rhine or hillside trails, and get a feel for the country. If you’re into hiking and want to slow down, two days lets you combine Vaduz with a proper mountain hike and maybe a castle village like Balzers. Anything beyond that only makes sense if you’re using Liechtenstein as a quiet base for alpine hikes rather than as a destination on its own.
You can absolutely get around Liechtenstein without a car, and for backpackers it’s usually the smarter move. The whole country is covered by a simple bus network that runs along the valley and up to most villages, and distances are short enough that you can combine buses with walking or hiking between towns. Many travelers just arrive by train to Sargans or Buchs in Switzerland, hop on a bus into Vaduz, and then use the same buses to reach trailheads and viewpoints.
If you’re short on cash and time, focus on Vaduz and the surrounding hills plus one mountain area. Walk through Vaduz’s compact center, look up at Vaduz Castle from below, then head onto the hillside trails above town for views over the Rhine valley that feel way more expensive than they are. If you can squeeze in a second stop, aim for the higher villages like Malbun or Triesenberg, where you get classic alpine scenery, good hiking, and that “tiny country in big mountains” feeling.
You can skip paying for most museums and castle interiors unless you’re a hardcore history nerd, because the real payoff here is outside on the trails and viewpoints. Don’t burn time trying to see every village in the valley either; many feel similar, so it’s better to pick one or two, hike between them, and then move on to cheaper countries nearby. If your schedule is tight, treat Liechtenstein as a focused day trip for views and a hike rather than a place to slowly “collect” sights.
Yes, our itinerary-planner does exactly that. Set your trip length in days, give your interests and travel style, optionally give start- and end location and/or some mandatory stops you would like to include and the itinerary planner creates your personalized routes for Liechtenstein in seconds.
