Backpacking in Crocker Range
👌 Worth visitingnational park ranked #9
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 17, 2026

Your shirt is already damp when the first leech hits your boot, and all you can hear is water—dripping from leaves, sliding off moss, a river somewhere below the trees. The air feels heavy enough to chew, and every step on the muddy trail squelches. This is Crocker Range National Park, the long green spine between Kota Kinabalu and the interior of Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. For backpackers, it’s quieter and rougher than Kinabalu Park or Danum Valley: cheaper entrance, thin crowds, real forest, but limited marked trails and basic, sometimes closed, facilities. Camping and homestays exist, yet you trade comfort and easy transport for solitude, cloud-forest ridges, and birdlife. If you want polished infrastructure, go to Kinabalu; if you want raw, slightly awkward jungle, come here.

💡 HighlightsMust-see experiences and standout moments

  • Ridge-top viewpoints and panoramas — Crocker Range is a long spine of mountains, and the ridge viewpoints give those proper sweeping Sabah views. On a clear morning you can look out over layered hills and, if you’re lucky, pick out Mount Kinabalu in the distance. Great for sunrise, long shadows, and simple, wide-open scenery.
  • Mossy (cloud) forest — the upper slopes get cold and wet enough to be carpeted in moss, ferns and dangling epiphytes. The trees look ancient and twisted; it’s the kind of forest that feels primeval and is excellent for botanizing and quiet wildlife watching.
  • Lowland dipterocarp rainforest and canopy life — lower elevations hold tall dipterocarps and a dense canopy, which means you get a different suite of plants and animals than up on the ridge: big trees, fig trees,

  • Lowland dipterocarp rainforest and canopy life — lower elevations hold tall dipterocarps and a dense canopy, which means you get a different suite of plants and animals than up on the ridge: big trees, fig trees, lots of birds and squirrels, and the jungle sounds you imagine at dusk.
  • Rivers, streams and small waterfalls — there are cool clear streams slicing the valleys that make for great rest stops on hikes. The water features are photogenic and refreshing on a hot day, and the edges are good for spotting frogs, dragonflies and stream-loving insects.
  • Pitcher plants, orchids and other unique plants — Crocker Range hosts a wide variety of Bornean plants: Nepenthes (pitcher plants), wild orchids and other specialists that thrive in the different elevation bands. You don’t need to be a botanist to enjoy the strange shapes and colors.
  • Birdwatching and small mammal encounters — the park is quieter than the big tourist spots, so early mornings can be rewarding: kingfishers, hornbills at the forest edge, plus treetop activity from macaques, squirrels and other forest mammals. Bring binoculars and patience.
  • Traditional villages and agroforestry landscapes — Crocker Range is woven with Dusun and other local communities. Short walks to villages or homestays show how people manage rice terraces and hill farms alongside conserved forest, which adds cultural texture to the natural scenery.
Personal favorite: Mossy (cloud) forest — the atmosphere up there is quiet and strange in the best way; stick around at dawn and the place almost feels like it’s waking up in slow motion.

  • Weather: The dry season from March to October is your best bet. Rainfall drops significantly, making trails less slippery and river crossings safer. Avoid November to February when heavy monsoon rains can flood paths and limit visibility.

  • Temperature: Expect daytime highs around 24-28°C (75-82°F) and cooler nights dipping to 16-20°C (61-68°F). The elevation keeps it mild year-round, but the dry season feels more comfortable for hiking.

  • Daylight Hours: Roughly 12 hours of daylight year-round, but the sun rises earlier and sets earlier during the dry months, giving you a solid window for trekking without rushing.

  • Seasonal Activities: Dry months favor wildlife spotting and river activities. The wet season can bring spectacular waterfalls but at the cost of trail safety.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and guide fees stay stable year-round, but transport costs can rise during peak holiday periods.

Pro-tip: Plan your visit in the shoulder months of March-April or September-October to dodge crowds and catch the best weather without paying holiday premiums.
