- The Thermal Grotto (la Gruta) — A steamy tunnel carved into the rock where hot spring water pools in dim, cave-like chambers; it’s an uncanny mix of sauna, swimming hole and cathedral of water. The warm, mineral-rich baths inside feel otherworldly and are the signature reason people come here. (Personal favorite.)
- Terraced Hot Pools — Rows of man-made terraces filled with warm, turquoise water cascading down the canyon wall; perfect for lounging and people-watching. They’re easy on the wallet and great for soaking after a dusty hike.
- The Turquoise River Through the Canyon — A shallow, warm river threaded through a narrow gorge with glittering blue-green water; you can wade, float, or follow it upstream for more secluded spots. The color and the way the canyon frames the flow make it postcard-ready.

- Waterfalls and Natural Plunge Spots — Small falls and rocky drop-offs create natural swimming holes and jumping ledges for the more adventurous. Not extreme cliff-diving, but fun and free — and surprisingly refreshing when the sun’s beating down.
- Miradors and Short Hikes — A few short trails and viewpoints give sweeping views of the canyon, the river snakes below, and the scattered pools. Climb one at sunrise or late afternoon for quieter light and better photos.
- Camping, Rustic Cabins, and Budget Stays — The site has very basic cabins and plenty of camping room run by the local community, so you can stay cheap and soak whenever you want. Nights are chill, social, and a lot cheaper than nearby commercial resorts.
- Local Culture and Community-Run Management — Tolantongo is managed by local ejidos and small vendors, so eating, renting towels or buying small crafts helps the community directly. The food is simple and honest — expect tortilla, quesadillas, and stews made the local way.
