- Baghdwar (the main spring and park gateway) — The literal headwater for Kathmandu’s northern catchment and the most common entry point. You’ll pass through shady oaks and rhododendron and hit the cold spring that locals and trekkers rely on; good place to see how the park ties into city life.
- Shivapuri Peak — The park’s high point with sweeping views over the Kathmandu Valley and, on a clear day, the distant Himalayan chain. The approach is forested and quiet, great for a morning push where the light and birdsong make the climb worth it.

- Nagi Gompa / Nagarjun Hill — A quiet Buddhist nunnery tucked into the forest with peaceful viewpoints and a cultural feel you won’t get on other trails. The walk around Nagarjun has good singletrack, prayer flags, and very human-scale views of valley life below.
- Sundarijal waterfalls and river trail — A popular trailhead that starts with small cascades and follows a pleasant river gorge into the park. It’s a handy, shaded route that’s great for a shorter day-hike or as the start of longer routes to Shivapuri or Chisapani.
- Birdlife and wildlife watching — The park’s mix of oak, rhododendron and bamboo supports deer, wild boar, macaques and a surprising number of birds (warblers, woodpeckers, pheasants and raptors). Bring binoculars and go early — the best sightings happen before the midday hikers arrive.
- Rhododendron and forest ecology — In spring the hills light up with rhododendron blooms and the understory changes colour; otherwise the mix of oak, pine and bamboo gives the trails a lush, cool feel. It’s one of the few quick escapes from Kathmandu that actually feels like proper mountain forest.
