- Sea of drifting sand (the “river of sand”) — Huge open stretches of wind-swept sand that actually move and shift; walking out onto them feels almost desert-like and totally out of character for the Netherlands. (Personal favorite — nothing else gives that barefoot-sand-in-your-shoes thrill.)
- Pine-forest corridors — Long shaded trails through rows of pines that smell of resin and cool you down between dune sections. The contrast between dense forest and sudden open sand is one of the park’s signature moments.
- Heather and flowering heathland — In late summer the heath turns purple and the open flats hum with insects and butterflies; it’s a gorgeous color pop against the beige sand and dark trees.
