Backpacking in NS Walk Veluwezoom
🏆 Top pickhike ranked #3
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 30, 2026

Most people sell NS Walk Veluwezoom as a gentle forest stroll; the surprise is how punchy the elevation feels for flat-as-a-pancake The Netherlands, with real climbs that actually wake up your calves. The route runs through Veluwezoom National Park in Gelderland, east of Arnhem, and it strings together heathland, old beech forest, and sandy tracks that feel closer to low mountains than to Dutch polder. It’s around 15–17 km depending on variant, very easy to reach by train between Dieren and Velp, and that rail access makes it a no-brainer day hike. The upside: wide purple heather in late summer, rolling ridges, and enough up-and-down to keep strong walkers entertained. The downside: sections of monotonous pine, busy weekends, and softer views than the wilder Hoge Veluwe or the dunes near Nijmegen. I still finish it grinning, legs humming, eating supermarket stroopwafels on the platform.

💡 HighlightsTop highlights of NS Walk Veluwezoom

  1. Posbank Panorama (Het Posbank) — The signature high ridge of Veluwezoom with wide, swooping views over heath, forests and the Rhine/ IJssel valley. Sunrise or sunset here is why postcards exist; steep-ish climbs and open viewpoints make it feel like real hiking, not just a walk in the park. (Personal favorite — I keep coming back for the light.)
  2. Heather Moorlands — In late August-September the heath turns purple and the whole landscape becomes a low, blooming sea; it’s one of those rare, showy seasonal spectacles in the Netherlands. Smell, color and bees — simple, huge payoff for very little effort.
  3. Moraine Ridges and Sandy Tracks — Veluwezoom’s rolling hills are glacial moraine, so you get real ups and downs, exposed sandy patches and wind-scoured tracks that feel unlike the usually flat

Moraine Ridges and Sandy Tracks — Veluwezoom’s rolling hills are glacial moraine, so you get real ups and downs, exposed sandy patches and wind-scoured tracks that feel unlike the usually flat Dutch countryside. The terrain changes fast, which keeps the hike interesting underfoot and in the views.
  4. Wildlife Encounters — Roe deer, red deer and the occasional wild boar inhabit the park; dawn and dusk are best for sightings and quiet, watch-from-a-distance moments. It’s not a zoo — the animals are wild — so bring binoculars and patience rather than expecting guaranteed photo ops.
  5. Rozendaal Castle and Gardens (Huis Rosendael) — A short detour from the trails leads to a historic estate with landscaped gardens and quirky “trick” fountains that date back centuries. It’s a cultural palate-cleanser after miles of heath and forest — good spot to rest, grab a coffee, and reset your legs.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and transport costs spike in summer. Booking in shoulder seasons can save you a chunk, letting you invest more in local food or gear upgrades.

Pro-tip: Hit the trail in early autumn when the air crisps, the crowds thin, and the landscape shifts color—your legs will thank you, and the views will reward every step.
