I stood on the fort’s outer wall, photographed the information board with the layout map, then used it to find the shortest loop past the gun positions. The island sits at the sea entrance of the North Sea Canal, in the port of IJmuiden, about 30 km west of Amsterdam. Expect few crowds and modest costs, but also few facilities and limited opening times. The reward is a rare, intact piece of coastal defense with harbor ships passing very close.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #24 attraction in The Netherlands
What makes it a must-see attraction

Backpackers come for a quiet counterweight to Amsterdam’s crowds. The fort is part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam, a UNESCO World Heritage site, so one short visit explains how the Dutch protected their capital from the sea. Thick brick walls, casemates and later German bunkers sit on one small artificial island, which makes the layers of history easy to read. Ocean freighters slide through the North Sea Canal locks only meters away, a scene few other forts offer. It suits a half-day side trip from the capital.

💡 HighlightsKey sights and experiences for travelers

  1. The round fort walls: Heavy 19th-century brickwork built to survive naval bombardment, with casemates you can look into.
  2. Gun positions: The armored emplacements show how artillery once covered the harbor entrance.
  3. German bunkers: Concrete additions from the Second World War, a clear contrast with the older brick.
  4. Ship watching: Freighters, ferries and pilot boats pass close by on their way to the canal and the Port of Amsterdam.
  5. Guided tours: When offered, guides explain the engineering of building an island in open water and its role in the defense line.
  6. Harbor views: From the walls you can see the IJmuiden locks, the piers and the North Sea beyond.
  7. Events and exhibitions: The island hosts occasional events and displays inside restored spaces, so check the current calendar before going.

🛏️ Where to stay? How to pick the right area

IJmuiden itself is the most practical base, since the fort island sits just off its harbor and the beach, a short bus or bike ride from the town center. The area around the harbor and beach has a relaxed seaside feel, plenty of cafés, and safe, well-lit streets in the evening. Budget travelers who want nightlife and more hostel choice should stay in Haarlem, about 25 minutes away by bus, or Amsterdam, roughly 40 minutes by bus and train. Both have frequent connections, social common rooms, and easy day-trip logistics. Zandvoort is another option for summer beach vibes, with a handy train link to Haarlem.

Expect to spend roughly USD 60 to 120 a day around the Forteiland IJmuiden, with lodging in nearby Haarlem or Amsterdam as the biggest expense. Access to the island is typically through organized tours or special open days, so prices vary by operator.

FAQFrequently asked questions about Forteiland IJmuiden

Plan on 1.5 to 3 hours on the island itself, longer with a guided tour. From Amsterdam, count another 1 to 1.5 hours each way, so it fills a relaxed half day. Pair it with IJmuiden’s beach or piers if you want a full afternoon.
For most backpackers it is, as long as you join a tour or event when one is running, because the guides explain what the bare brick cannot. Access and prices depend on the season and the event, so check the official site and expect roughly €10 to 20 for tours. The sights are modest, so it is best for history and engineering fans.
Take a train from Amsterdam Centraal to Haarlem (about 15 to 20 minutes), then a regional bus to IJmuiden (roughly 30 to 40 minutes). A direct bus from Amsterdam Velsen-area connections is also possible, but Haarlem is the easiest hub. Cycling from Haarlem takes about 1 hour along the dunes and canal.
⚠️ Things can change over time, so always validate details locally before you go.

We 💚 feedbackIs it worth it?

Fort history fans, photographers and anyone tired of Amsterdam’s queues will enjoy this most. Casual sightseers may find it small and sparse. Treat it as a quiet half-day trip, pair it with IJmuiden’s beach, and expect atmosphere over spectacle.
