Backpacking in Vodlozersky
👍 Recommendednational park ranked #14
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

Most people only realize after they leave that Vodlozersky quietly saves them money: once you’re in, there’s almost nothing to spend it on, so your budget naturally stretches. The park sits in northern European Russia, straddling southern Karelia and the Arkhangelsk region, deep in taiga country. It’s a serious, remote option for backpackers who like long, quiet hikes, big lakes, wooden chapels, and real chances of seeing elk and bear tracks instead of souvenir stalls. Trails can be rough, wayfinding basic, and access awkward, with limited public transport and modest but cheap village guesthouses or simple camping. Fees are low, crowds almost nonexistent, and the mood is more “Siberian backcountry” than the slightly more developed, better-marked Karelian parks closer to Petrozavodsk.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #14 national park in Russia
What makes this national park worth exploring

Backpackers flock to Vodlozersky National Park for its blend of independent exploration and affordable camping options. The park offers a range of trails, from serene lakeside walks to more challenging forest routes, catering to various skill levels. This variety makes it ideal for self-guided travelers who prefer to set their own pace. Nearby, budget-friendly hostels provide a comfortable base without breaking the bank. The absence of large tour groups means you can truly connect with the landscape, avoiding the pitfalls of overcrowded attractions. By choosing Vodlozersky, you preserve your energy and budget for the experiences that matter most—immersing yourself in nature’s tranquility.

💡 HighlightsPlaces and moments you shouldn't skip

  • Lake Vodlozero and its archipelago — the lake is the park’s heart: thousands of islands and rocky skerries, perfect for paddling, camping on a windswept spit and watching sunrise light hit bare granite. Water routes feel remote even on a shoestring trip.
  • Old-growth boreal forests — vast stands of spruce and Scots pine, some centuries old, carpeted with mosses and reindeer lichens. The silence and cathedral-like trees are what make this place feel truly northern.
  • Peat bogs and patterned mires — miles of raised and blanket bogs with cotton-grass, sundews and cloudberries. The open, mirror-flat pools offer almost abstract landscapes and excellent birding in spring and autumn.
  • Wildlife hotspots — moose and brown bears are common in the backcountry, beaver ponds reshape streams, and the park

  • Wildlife hotspots — moose and brown bears are common in the backcountry, beaver ponds reshape streams, and the park is great for spotting capercaillie, black grouse and migrating waterfowl. Bring patience; sightings often come to those who sit still.
  • Traditional villages and wooden architecture — tiny fishing and farming villages with old wooden houses and small chapels give a real feel for Pomor life. They’re low-crowd cultural stops where local craftsmanship and stories still survive.
  • Hiking trails and canoe routes — a mix of day hikes and multi-day river or lake paddles through quiet wilderness. Routes range from short nature trails to long portage-and-paddle itineraries; camping on islands is the classic budget option.
  • UNESCO biosphere landscapes and seasonal light — protected as a biosphere reserve, the park’s combination of forest, water and mire is unusually intact. Long summer evenings and stark winter light both make photography and simple wandering rewarding in different ways.

  • Seasonal Activities: Summer is prime for backpacking, fishing, and canoeing. Autumn colors are beautiful but come with slippery trails. Winter activities require specialized gear and experience.
  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and transport costs peak slightly in summer but remain reasonable compared to more popular Russian parks. Off-season travel can save money but adds logistical challenges.
Pro-tip: Aim for late June to early August—this window balances weather, daylight, and accessibility, letting you focus your energy on the trail, not the elements or crowds.
