The Rwanda Art Museum occupies the former presidential residence of Juvénal Habyarimana, and the house itself is as much the exhibit as the art on its walls. It sits in Kanombe, on the eastern side of Kigali in Rwanda’s capital, close to the airport. The collection of traditional and contemporary Rwandan work is small, and a first-timer can see it all in an hour or two. Imigongo patterns, baskets and carved pieces are worth slow looking; the contemporary rooms are uneven. The setting carries real weight, since the president’s plane fell in the grounds in April 1994. Crowds are rare, access is simple by moto or taxi, and the mood is quiet. Check the back garden, where the plane’s wreckage still lies in the grass.
