Backpacking in Bohusleden
👍 Recommendedhike ranked #6
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

Most people picture Bohusleden as a flat forest stroll outside Gothenburg and then get blindsided by how wild it feels. The trail runs through Bohuslän in West Sweden, from the outskirts of Gothenburg up toward the Norwegian border, and it’s a long one: roughly 370 km, broken into bite-sized stages. You grind up short, steep hills on roots and rock, then suddenly stand on bare granite with lakes and dark spruce stretching forever; ten minutes later you’re wading through mud, cursing your shoe choice. It’s easy to reach by tram or bus from Gothenburg, which makes section-hiking simple, but the waymarking can be patchy and some shelters feel tired. Compared with Kungsleden it’s lower, wetter, more intimate—less drama, more everyday Swedish forest—with just enough effort to make that gas-station beer in the next village taste earned.

💡 HighlightsMust-see experiences and standout moments

  • Bohuslän archipelago and granite skerries — rounded pink-grey granite dropping into the sea, tiny islands and skerries right off the trail and occasional tide-swept shorelines. The coastal geology and endless sea views make it feel like a mountain trail that grew seaside — rare compared with inland forest treks.
  • Clifftop panoramas over Skagerrak — shady forest suddenly opens onto raw cliffs with wide ocean vistas, perfect for sunset stops. Those exposed benches give dramatic, nautical light and a sense of real remoteness you don’t get on flatter countryside routes.

  • Coastal fishing villages and maritime culture — little harbors, simple boathouses, lighthouses and fishermen’s traces right along the way. It’s a living coastal culture threaded into the trail, so you get natural scenery plus human history without a long detour.
  • Wildlife: sea eagles, seals and moose — expect marine life along the coast (seals, cormorants, the occasional sea eagle) and classic inland fauna like moose and woodpeckers. That mixture of sea and forest wildlife makes sightings more varied than purely inland or alpine trails.
