Plenty of travelers assume the Village Museum is a sleepy collection of old huts, but it is a working cultural stage with live drumming, dance and craft-making. It sits in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s largest city, on Bagamoyo Road in Kijitonyama, north of the center. You wander between full-size homes from different ethnic groups, duck into doorways, and poke around yards. Crowds stay thin outside school-trip mornings, and the entry price runs higher for foreigners than for residents, which stings a little for such a compact site. Still, the huts, the performances and the carvers at work make it the quickest way to grasp how varied Tanzania is. Bring small bills for the dance tips and crafts.

Village Museum packs a country that takes weeks to cross into one shady compound, which makes it a smart first stop before you head inland. You can step from a Chagga hut built for the Kilimanjaro slopes to a Maasai boma of low, dung-plastered rooms, then to the tall thatched domes of the Hehe, and see how climate and livelihood shaped each design. The homes are full-size and you can enter many of them, so the differences in ceiling height, hearth placement and storage register physically.
