Paint dust sticks to your sandals as a welder in the next studio sparks up and a Dar es Salaam street kid’s mural dries on the wall behind you. Nafasi Art Space sits in Mikocheni, a short ride north-west of the city center in Tanzania’s biggest city. It’s a converted warehouse complex of studios, not a monument, so crowds stay thin and entry is cheap or free depending on events. Don’t expect polished galleries on every corner. Come for working artists, open doors and honest conversation. Spend a first day wandering studios in the morning, then stay for lunch and whatever show is on.

  • Long Dry Season (June to October): Dar es Salaam is at its most comfortable, with highs of 28 to 31°C (82 to 88°F), lower humidity and few downpours. Gallery visits and walks between studios are easy.
  • Short Rains (November to December): Brief afternoon showers, 30 to 33°C (86 to 91°F) and heavy humidity. Fewer visitors, and quieter studios.
  • Hot Season (January to February): The hottest weeks, often 32 to 35°C (90 to 95°F). Go in the morning.
  • Long Rains (March to May): Downpours flood roads in Mikocheni and slow traffic badly. Prices for rooms dip.
