- The Main Ridge Rainforest itself — One of the oldest legally protected forests in the Western Hemisphere, it’s pure, misty tropical rainforest: layered canopy, thick mosses and a humid, primeval feel that’s why people come here in the first place.
- Gilpin Trace — The classic trail through the reserve: steady climbs, shady singletrack, stream crossings and good chances to spot birds and orchids. It’s short enough for a half-day outing but feels properly wild.
- Blue Basin & ridge viewpoints — Deep green valleys and sweeping ridge views; on clear days you get those dramatic, forested panoramas that make for great photos and a real sense of how intact the island’s interior still is.
- Argyle Falls and forest pools — Cascading falls and cool plunge pools on the forest’s edge. Not every hike ends

- Argyle Falls and forest pools — Cascading falls and cool plunge pools on the forest’s edge. Not every hike ends here, but when it does it’s a welcome place to cool off and watch forest life drink and bathe.
- Top-notch birdwatching — The reserve is a bird magnet: hummingbirds, manakins, motmots and other forest specialists perform in the understory and canopy. Bring binoculars and be ready for quick, colorful flashes.
- Orchids, bromeliads and epiphyte gardens — Look up and you’ll see walls of orchids and bromeliads clinging to branches, plus a mossy, fern-heavy understory. Plant diversity here is part of the reserve’s quiet wow factor.
- Night walks for moths, frogs and nocturnals — The forest comes alive after dark: tree frogs calling, moths that eclipse your headlamp, and night birds and other shy creatures. It’s a totally different, slightly spooky atmosphere in the best way.
