The reserve dates to 1776, which makes it one of the oldest legally protected rainforests in the Western Hemisphere, and it has no gate, ticket booth or grand lodge. It covers the spine of the northeast of Tobago, in Trinidad and Tobago, and the Roxborough to Parlatuvier road cuts straight across it. That road is the first practical lesson. The trailheads sit beside it, so the sensible traveler arranges a taxi pickup in advance, because phone signal fades and taxis do not roam the ridge. The trails are short and damp, and the forest floor is steep enough to humble your knees. Birdwatching is excellent, crowds are close to nonexistent, and the canopy muffles everything except birds and your own breathing. Buses are infrequent and many trails are faint, so hire a local guide, who also finds the birds you would walk past.
