Kapchorwa was once a remote, rarely visited district town on the Mount Elgon escarpment, reached by rough murram tracks and known mostly to coffee buyers and Sebei farmers. Today it is a lively hill town with paved access, guesthouses, and a steady trickle of hikers. It sits in eastern Uganda, on the northwestern flank of Mount Elgon near the Kenyan border. I would arrive in the morning, drop your pack, and walk straight toward the edge of the escarpment, because the views over the plains are the real hook. The town itself is a modest strip of shops, a market, and boda stands, so skip lingering downtown. Kapchorwa is worth a stop of its own, mainly as a gateway to Sipi Falls and Mount Elgon rather than for the town itself. Sipi's three waterfalls are about 30 to 45 minutes away by boda, and Elgon park day hikes start around US$30 to 40 in fees. Walkers and coffee fans get the most from it.
Two to three days covers Kapchorwa well. Give one day to Sipi Falls (about US$15 to 30 with a guide) and one to a lower-slope Elgon hike or Kapkwai Forest, with the remaining time for the market and a slow morning. Add a day if you want a longer Elgon climb or if rain forces a delay.
Kapchorwa can be done as a long day from Mbale, which is about 1.5 to 2 hours by shared taxi for roughly US$2 to 3 each way, but you would spend most of the day on the road. Staying at least one night lets you reach Sipi's trails early, when views are clear. Kampala is too far for a day return, at about 6 to 8 hours each way.

Kapchorwa rewards early mornings, when clouds lift off the escarpment and farm tracks are quiet. Come in the drier months for the clearest views and firmer trails. I would bring a rain jacket and book guides a day ahead. It is small and slow, so pair it with Sipi.
