Backpacking in Muliwai Trail
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated July 30, 2026

Most people online sell the Muliwai Trail as a mellow beach-to-valley stroll; in reality, it’s a stairmaster carved into a cliff that will torch your quads before you even see Waimanu. Tucked on the Big Island of Hawaii in the USA, this roughly 9-mile out-and-back (to the first camps) punches above its distance with brutal, humid switchbacks, slick mud, and stream crossings. The payoff is huge: empty black-sand views back over Waipiʻo, a wild, waterfall-lined valley, and serious solitude compared with the more crowded coastal hikes in the USA. Access is awkward without a car—public transport won’t really get you to Waipiʻo—so it stays more hardcore than postcard.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #99 hike in the USA
Why visitors keep coming back

The Muliwai Trail in the USA is a magnet for backpackers chasing that perfect blend of scenery-to-effort ratio. You’ll sweat it out on the way down, but the payoff? A jaw-dropping view of the Hamakua Coast that makes every step worth it. Public transport gets you close, and the trail is low-cost, making it accessible for everyone. You can tackle it in a day or stretch it out, fitting seamlessly into a longer backpacking route. The flexible distances mean you can adapt based on your energy levels or time constraints. Whether you’re savoring a cold beer at the end or just soaking in the moment, this hike delivers both challenge and reward in spades.

💡 HighlightsThe experiences that define the visit

  1. Muliwai Falls and the Freshwater Pool — A short scramble off the main track drops you to a clear pool beneath a multi-tiered waterfall; great for a cooling swim and the single most cinematic photo spot on the trail.
  2. Riparian Corridor of Native Flora — The trail follows a lush stream corridor with dense ʻōhiʻa, hala, and native ferns; the plant mix and humid microclimate feel totally different from drier island trails and make the hike feel remote.
  3. River Crossings and Bouldery Gullies — Expect several shallow stream crossings and narrow, rocky gullies that keep the hike engaging and technical enough to feel like real backcountry — bring good shoes and be ready to hop rocks.
  4. Scenic Valley Overlooks — A couple of short climbs open to broad valley-and-coast views where you can see the stream

  4. Scenic Valley Overlooks — A couple of short climbs open to broad valley-and-coast views where you can see the stream winding to the sea; those panoramas are the best reward for the handful of steep switchbacks.
  5. Old Hawaiian Agricultural Terraces — Ruined loʻi (taro terraces) and stone walls dot parts of the lower valley, giving the route a tactile cultural layer you won’t get on a typical day-hike.
My personal favorite: Muliwai Falls and the Freshwater Pool.

🛡️ SafetyStaying Safe: What Travelers Should Know

The Muliwai Trail in the USA is a wild ride, but it’s manageable with the right mindset. Expect steep sections that demand your focus; the footing can be tricky, especially after rain. Navigation is straightforward, but keep your eyes peeled for trail markers.

Weather can shift quickly, so pack layers and be ready for sun or sudden showers. Wildlife encounters are rare but possible; if you spot a wild pig or a deer, observe from a distance and keep your snacks tucked away.

Timing is key—start early to avoid the heat and enjoy the trail in relative solitude. Embrace the challenge; the payoff is a breathtaking view that makes every step worthwhile.

We 💚 feedbackSumming up the experience

The Muliwai Trail is a wild ride—steep climbs and muddy paths lead to a jaw-dropping view of the coastline that makes every step worth it. But be ready for the sweat; it’s no stroll in the park. The payoff? A secluded beach where you can finally crack open that cold beer and soak it all in.

✈️ When did I visit the USA?
In January 2023 I visited New York. Many years before, before digital cameras existed, I discovered most of the national parks in the West.
