Backpacking in Broadway
👌 Worth visitingattraction ranked #19
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

A guy selling half-price tickets at the red steps in Times Square squints at my backpack and says, “Matinee? Lines are shorter and the seats are the same.” He was right. Broadway runs through Midtown Manhattan in New York City, United States, around West 41st to 53rd Streets. It dazzles, it crowds, and full-price tickets sting. Smarter move: the TKTS booth and lottery apps exist because theaters sell unsold seats cheaply, so check them same day, and book weekday matinees.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #19 attraction in the USA
What makes this attraction worth visiting

Broadway is where American musical theater lives, with 41 official theaters clustered around Times Square, each one a working stage rather than a museum. You can see a show that took years to build, performed eight times a week by people at the top of their craft. For a backpacker, that is a rare night out where the ticket buys real craft. It also anchors any New York route, since the Theater District sits a short walk from Central Park and Midtown's major sights, and the glow of the marquees at night is worth seeing even without a seat.

  2. TKTS booth, Father Duffy Square: The red steps double as a viewing platform over Times Square, and the booth sells discounted same-day tickets.
  3. Times Square: Walls of LED screens turn midnight into noon. Come once, stay twenty minutes, and look up.
  4. Stage door scene: After shows, fans gather outside side entrances hoping for autographs from cast members.
  5. Shubert Alley: A short private pedestrian lane between 44th and 45th Streets, lined with posters and theater history.
  6. Lincoln Center: the street Broadway runs past it on the Upper West Side, with free plazas and fountain, plus opera and ballet venues.

Broadway’s highlights fit into one afternoon of wandering plus an evening show of about two and a half hours.

🛏️ Where to stay?Best areas and accommodation options

Hell’s Kitchen (Midtown West) is the best base for backpackers, a ten-minute walk west of the Theater District. Ninth Avenue is lined with cheap eateries and bars, and the neighborhood feels more local than Times Square itself. Midtown West itself puts you steps from the theaters, though rooms there cost more and the crowds never let up. Long Island City in Queens is a budget-friendly alternative, with a subway ride of about 15 minutes to Times Square and skyline views. Harlem and Upper West Side areas offer calmer streets and hostel-style beds along subway lines that reach Broadway quickly.

👛 Costs (as of 22 October 2026)Money, prices, and spending tips

Broadway theater costs about US$150 for one day, with a discounted show ticket as the biggest line item. The Theater District around Times Square (40.76 N) packs 41 theaters between 41st and 53rd Streets.

FAQFrequently asked questions about Broadway

Plan on three hours for one show, or a full day if you also walk the Theater District. Most evening performances start at 7 or 8 p.m. and run two to three hours, and matinees run at 2 p.m. Add an hour for Times Square and the TKTS booth.
For most travelers, yes, if you pick a show with discounted seats. Broadway tickets range from about US$40 for rush or lottery seats to over US$200 for premium shows. Walking the street itself is free, so a show is the only real cost.
Take the subway to Times Square-42nd Street, served by the 1, 2, 3, N, Q, R, W, 7 and S lines, for US$3 per ride. From JFK Airport, the AirTrain and subway take roughly 60 to 90 minutes. Buses along Broadway and walking from Midtown hotels also work.
⚠️ Things can change over time, so always validate details locally before you go.

We 💚 feedbackIs it worth it?

Broadway needs one evening and one daytime stroll, so two nights in New York covers it. I would book a weekday matinee, skip the crowded souvenir shops, and wander the theater blocks once the lights come on.

✈️ When did I visit the USA?
In January 2023 I visited New York. Many years before, before digital cameras existed, I discovered most of the national parks in the West.
