Backpacking in The Getty Villa
👀 For curious travelersattraction ranked #21
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

The guard at the tram stop glanced at my printed ticket and said, “Garden first, before the statues get all the attention.” I obeyed, and the Getty Villa's herb beds smelled of rosemary before I saw a single marble. The Getty Villa sits in Pacific Palisades, west of Los Angeles, in the United States, and the ancient Roman-style antiquities collection is worth your afternoon. Entry is free but timed, so reserve ahead. Skip the café lines and linger at the Outer Peristyle's long reflecting pool, ringed by bronze statues.

Discover everything you want to know in the 📖 the USA Travel Guide.

Reasons people choose to visit here

The Getty Villa is the rare Los Angeles stop where free admission buys you real antiquity: about 44,000 Greek, Roman and Etruscan objects, with roughly 1,200 on view. The building is a re-creation of the Villa dei Papiri from Herculaneum, so you walk through Roman architecture on a California cliff. Add the Outer Peristyle garden, a 220-foot pool lined with bronze copies, and you have a classical-world fix that needs no passport.

💡 HighlightsWhat this place is best known for

  1. Outer Peristyle: a long reflecting pool framed by columns, clipped hedges and bronze statues, modeled on the garden of the Herculaneum villa. It is the photo everyone wants, and it earns it.
  2. Lansdowne Herakles: a Roman marble of the hero in his lion skin, one of the collection’s signature pieces and impressively muscled.
  3. Greek vase galleries: painted vases and reliefs where you can trace myths scene by scene.
  4. Herb Garden: a small kitchen garden with plants grown in the ancient Mediterranean, smelling of rosemary and sage.
  5. Inner Peristyle: a quieter courtyard with a fountain and painted walls, good for catching your breath.
  6. Getty Villa Theater: an outdoor amphitheater modeled on classical designs, hosting summer performances of Greek drama.
  7. Ocean views: terraces looking toward the Pacific and Santa

The Getty Villa charges nothing for admission, so the cheapest items are all of these, and only parking costs money.

🛏️ Where to stay?Best areas to stay in the USA

Santa Monica is the best base for backpackers, about 5 miles (8 km) southeast of the Getty Villa along the coast. The area around the Third Street Promenade and the beach has the densest cluster of hostels, plus plenty of cheap tacos and pizza slices, and you can walk to the pier at night with plenty of other people around. Venice, a short bike or bus ride further south, is livelier and more alternative, with a younger crowd and a boardwalk scene. Both put you on Pacific Coast Highway bus routes. Pacific Palisades itself has almost no budget beds, so skip staying right at the museum.

👛 Costs (as of 22 October 2026)What things cost and how to budget

The Getty Villa costs about US$77 to 124 a day for a backpacker who pays for parking or transit and brings a packed lunch.

ParkingUS$25 to 30Flat fee per car, so splitting with others helps. Skip it by taking the bus.

FAQTraveler FAQ

Plan on 2 to 3 hours at the Getty Villa, which covers the Greek, Roman and Etruscan galleries plus the gardens. Add another hour if you join a garden or architecture tour, or sit down for a meal at the cafe. Timed entry runs from 10 a.m., and the museum closes at 5 p.m. on most days.
Yes, because the Getty Villa has free admission, so the only costs are parking (roughly US$25 to 30 per car) or a bus fare of US$2 to 4. For that you get one of the best antiquities collections in the country, set inside a re-creation of a Roman country house with a Pacific view. Reserve a timed ticket online, since walk-ins can be turned away.
Take a Metro bus along Pacific Coast Highway from Santa Monica to reach the Getty Villa in roughly 30 to 40 minutes, for about US$2 to 4. By car, it is about 30 minutes from downtown Santa Monica, with a parking fee of roughly US$25 to 30. The address is 17985 Pacific Coast Highway, Pacific Palisades, and the entrance is a short walk up from the stop.
⚠️ Things can change over time, so always validate details locally before you go.

We 💚 feedbackKey takeaways before you go

The Getty Villa is best in the last hours before closing, when the crowds thin and the low sun lights the pool and columns. I would book a late timed slot and bring a light jacket for the ocean breeze.

✈️ When did I visit the USA?
In January 2023 I visited New York. Many years before, before digital cameras existed, I discovered most of the national parks in the West.
