Backpacking in Disneyland Park
🏆 Top pickattraction ranked #2
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

The churro vendor on Main Street U.S.A. hands over a cinnamon-sugar stick so hot I juggle it like a stolen jewel, and that is the moment I learned to buy one before 9 a.m., when the line is three people instead of thirty. Disneyland Park sits in Anaheim, in the southern part of California, United States, roughly an hour's drive southeast of downtown Los Angeles. The wow-factor is real: Sleeping Beauty Castle, the detail of Pirates of the Caribbean and Indiana Jones Adventure hold up against any modern theme park. The crowds are also real, and single-day tickets are pricey, so skip the weaker kiddie rides and spend your time on the big dark rides and Space Mountain. Getting here is easy, but the vibe is polite chaos with strollers. Unlike its neighbor Disney California Adventure, which leans on thrill rides and food festivals, Disneyland Park is the one with the original 1955 charm and story-driven rides.

Reasons people choose to visit here

Disneyland Park is the only Disney park Walt Disney personally walked through, and you can feel his obsession with detail on every block. The point is craftsmanship, not speed. Pirates of the Caribbean was one of the last rides he oversaw, and its bayou dining scene still runs on animatronics and trickery that modern screens rarely match. Indiana Jones Adventure in Adventureland is a jolting jeep ride through a collapsing temple, with a set so large it feels like film production rather than a ride queue.

For a backpacker, it is also a major California milestone. It sits alongside Hollywood, the Pacific coast and the desert as one of the state's defining experiences, and it works as a cultural lesson in American pop storytelling. For a backpacker, it is also a major California milestone. It sits alongside Hollywood, the Pacific coast and the desert as one of the state's defining experiences, and it works as a cultural lesson in American pop storytelling. Even if you grew up far from Disney cartoons, the fireworks over Sleeping Beauty Castle show how a theme park can act as shared mythology. It is worth the money if you pick one full day, arrive at opening, and treat it as a splurge rather than a routine stop.

💡 HighlightsTop highlights of Disneyland Park

  1. Sleeping Beauty Castle: The park's icon is smaller than you expect, which is the trick. Walk through it to find the storybook walkthrough scenes upstairs, free and usually quiet.
  2. Pirates of the Caribbean: A slow boat ride through bayou, battle and treasure caves. The animatronics and music are the reason the film franchise exists.
  3. Indiana Jones Adventure: A rough, rattling jeep ride through a temple with snakes, rolling boulders and a very loud ending. Ask for the front row if you like being shaken.
  4. Space Mountain: An indoor roller coaster in near darkness, so the speed feels bigger than it is. The queue is long but moves, and a single-rider line can help.
  5. Haunted Mansion: Doom Buggies carry you through ballrooms, graveyards and ghost parties. It is funny rather than frightening, and the Holiday

  5. Haunted Mansion: Doom Buggies carry you through ballrooms, graveyards and ghost parties. It is funny rather than frightening, and the Holiday version around Halloween and Christmas is a real draw.
  6. Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge: A themed land with Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, Rise of the Resistance and Batuu's alien food stalls. The blue milk is optional, the Rise of the Resistance ride is not.
  7. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad: A runaway mine train through red rock scenery. It is short, smooth and a good pick if you want a coaster with scenery.
  8. Fantasmic! and the fireworks: A nighttime show on the Rivers of America with water screens, fire and villains, followed by fireworks on select nights. Claim a spot early.
For a first visit, Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland Park is the one to ride first, because it shows exactly what makes the park different from any other.

  • Weekday Off-Peak (January to mid-February, late April to May, September to early November): Crowds thin out on Tuesdays through Thursdays, and highs run 21 to 28°C (70 to 82°F). Lines for Space Mountain and Indiana Jones Adventure often stay manageable.
  • Summer (June to August): Highs reach 28 to 33°C (82 to 91°F), parks stay open late, and crowds peak. Expect long waits and the highest ticket tiers.
  • Holidays (late November to early January, spring break, Easter): Peak crowds and top prices. Christmas decorations and the Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay are a draw, but the park can hit capacity.
  • Winter Weather: Highs of 18 to 22°C (64 to 72°F) and nights near 8 to 10°C (46 to 50°F). Rain is occasional, mostly December to March, and thins the lines.

Book a one-day ticket for a Tuesday or Wednesday outside school breaks, since the calendar sets the price tier.

Dorm-style beds are scarce in this area, so most solo travelers split a room with other travelers to bring costs down. Expect US$90 to 160 a night for a basic motel-style room, more on weekends and in summer.

Downtown Anaheim, about 3 km (2 miles) away, has a livelier local scene, with breweries and food stalls at the Anaheim Packing District, plus a Metrolink and Amtrak station at nearby Angel Stadium. It suits travelers who want a social evening and cheaper meals. Prices tend to be a little lower, but you will need the bus or a short rideshare to reach the gates.

Los Angeles hostels are an option if you want a social dorm, but the trip down is 45 minutes to over an hour each way by train or car, and traffic can make it far longer.

FAQFrequently asked questions about Disneyland Park

Disneyland Park takes one full day, roughly 10 to 12 hours, to cover the main rides like Space Mountain, Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean. Arriving at opening and staying for the fireworks gives the most value. Two days make sense if you want to add Disney California Adventure next door on a Park Hopper ticket.
Disneyland Park is worth the fee if you plan a full day and go on a midweek, low-tier date, when a one-day ticket starts around US$104. On peak days tickets exceed US$200, and long lines can eat several hours. Classic attractions such as Pirates of the Caribbean and the Haunted Mansion are unique to this park and can’t be found elsewhere.
Disneyland Park sits in Anaheim, about 45 km (28 miles) southeast of downtown Los Angeles, and most travelers arrive by car, Amtrak or Metrolink to Anaheim station, followed by an ART shuttle or short rideshare of about 10 minutes. From LAX the drive takes 45 to 90 minutes depending on traffic, and a shared shuttle costs around US$20 to 30. Parking at the Mickey and Friends structure costs about US$30 to 35.
⚠️ Things can change over time, so always validate details locally before you go.

We 💚 feedbackKey takeaways before you go

Disneyland Park pairs well with a few days around Los Angeles, since Santa Monica's beach and Hollywood's museums offer a calmer counterweight to a day of queues. I would book one full day here, arrive at opening, and skip the second day unless you love the rides.

✈️ When did I visit the USA?
In January 2023 I visited New York. Many years before, before digital cameras existed, I discovered most of the national parks in the West.
