Backpacking in Universal Islands of Adventure
🏆 Top pickattraction ranked #5
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

The park's Hogwarts Express runs only between Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida, and it needs a park-to-park ticket, so a single-park pass leaves you on the platform. Universal Islands of Adventure sits in Orlando, Florida, in the United States, southwest of downtown along the Kirkman Road corridor. The wow-factor is real: Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and VelociCoaster are the best rides in Florida, and the theming is dense enough to study. Crowds are not small, and the single-park ticket is pricey, so I skip the water-ride soaking unless it is hot. One moment surprised me: I expected Hogsmeade to be a painted backdrop, but the butterbeer foam, the snow on the rooftops and the shop doors that really opened made me stand there like a lost tourist. Compared with Magic Kingdom nearby, it is faster, louder and aimed at thrill-seekers, not parade-watchers.

Ranked #5 attraction in the USA
What sets this place apart

Universal Islands of Adventure earns a spot on a Florida route for two reasons that are hard to match elsewhere. The first is ride quality. VelociCoaster launches you twice and flips through a Velociraptor-themed course, and Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure mixes launches, a story and a forest set that feels built around you. If you have only one big-park day in Orlando, these two alone justify choosing this park over a stroll through most others.

The second is the sheer detail of the lands. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Hogsmeade is built to be walked slowly, with working shop windows, interactive wand spots and a castle that houses a ride inside. Seuss Landing and Jurassic Park are smaller but equally committed.

It is also an easy milestone on a Florida trip: a day … read more 👉

💡 HighlightsTop highlights of Universal Islands of Adventure

  1. Hogwarts Castle and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey: The Wizarding World of Harry Potter (Hogsmeade) is the reason most people buy a ticket. The ride winds through the castle's corridors, past talking portraits and the Sorting Hat, before a robotic-arm seat sends you after a Quidditch match. The queue is half the fun, and it gets long.
  2. Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure: A launched coaster with a sidecar-style bike, a backward climb and a stall mid-track. It rolls through the Forbidden Forest with creature animatronics. Riders with big frames should try the test seat at the entrance first.
  3. Jurassic World VelociCoaster: The tallest and fastest coaster in the park, with a 155-foot top-hat climb, a headlong dive and a near miss with a wall of raptor pens. It launches twice, and

  3. Jurassic World VelociCoaster: The tallest and fastest coaster in the park, with a 155-foot top-hat climb, a headlong dive and a near miss with a wall of raptor pens. It launches twice, and the inversions come quickly. Loose items go in free lockers, and it is the ride I would do first.
  4. The Incredible Hulk Coaster: A rocket launch from 0 to 40 mph in two seconds that flings you upside down over the lagoon. Older than the newer headliners, it still feels fierce, and the roar echoes across the park.
  5. Jurassic Park River Adventure: A raft ride through animatronic dinosaurs that ends with an 85-foot plunge in the dark. Sit in the front if you want to get properly soaked, or the back if you want to stay mostly dry.
  6. Skull Island: Reign of Kong: A truck-style vehicle rolls through a jungle ruin where a full-size animatronic Kong fights dinosaurs inches from your face. The queue winds through an excavated temple set that is detailed enough to explore.
  7. Hogsmeade Village and Butterbeer: Snow-dusted rooftops, Honeydukes candy, Ollivanders wand shows and Zonko's joke shop. The frozen Butterbeer, sweet and creamy with a foamy top, is the signature drink here. The Three Broomsticks serves hearty pub plates.
  8. Dudley Do-Right's Ripsaw Falls and Popeye and Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barges: Two log-flume-style water rides in Toon Lagoon that reliably soak you on hot Florida afternoons. They are a cheap way to cool down without a dedicated water park.
Universal Islands of Adventure gives away its cheapest thrill in Hogsmeade, where wandering the village streets, watching the Hogwarts Express steam past and peeking into shop windows costs nothing beyond the park ticket itself, and the Toon Lagoon splash rides add no extra fee.

Universal Boulevard and Sand Lake Road sit closer to the gates, around 5 to 10 minutes away. Chain budget hotels here often have free shuttles to Universal, which saves rideshare costs of US$12 to 25 each way. Social energy is lower, but groups splitting a room can bring the per-person price near hostel levels.
Downtown Orlando, around 25 to 30 minutes away by car, suits solo travelers who want bars, cafes and a sociable hostel crowd. Its SunRail station and Lynx buses make it workable without a car. Avoid the strip of cheap motels along Orange Blossom Trail, which is rough at night. Book hostels early for holiday weeks.

Universal Islands of Adventure is best on a weekday morning outside school holidays, when the gates open and you can ride the two big coasters before the lines build. I would arrive early, head straight to Hagrid’s, and save the water rides for the hot afternoon.

In January 2023 I visited New York. Many years before, before digital cameras existed, I discovered most of the national parks in the West.
