The San Diego Zoo is not a free-roaming safari park; that is the separate Safari Park, about 30 miles north in Escondido, while the zoo itself sits in Balboa Park, just north of downtown San Diego in the United States. Expect crowds at the pandas-and-koalas end on weekends, and a ticket price that makes you check the receipt twice. Still, the planting is unusually lush, and the animals get serious space. I connect the place with the dawn racket of the siamang gibbons, whooping across the canyon like a rowdy karaoke bar before the gates have properly opened. Unlike the Safari Park, where you ride out to herds, the zoo packs everything onto hillsides you walk on foot.

San Diego Zoo is one of the few places where a backpacker can stand a few feet from a koala, a giant panda and a hippo underwater window in a single afternoon, all inside a city park. The zoo's botanical collection is deliberate: Africa Rocks and Elephant Odyssey are planted with species from the regions their animals come from, so the walk feels like crossing habitats rather than cages. Downtown San Diego, especially the Gaslamp Quarter and East Village, is the best area for backpackers visiting San Diego Zoo, since it is about 3 to 4 km (2 to 2.5 miles) away and holds most of the city’s hostels. It is social, walkable and full of cheap tacos and bars. Bus 7 and other routes run from downtown to Balboa Park, and a rideshare is short and inexpensive when split. Stick to the busy blocks at night, as parts of East Village near the Gaslamp edge get rough after dark.

San Diego Zoo suits families, plant lovers and anyone who enjoys wandering a hillside garden with animals attached. If you are on a tight budget, it is a splurge. I would arrive at opening, ride the Skyfari early, and pick two or three zones instead of racing through everything.
