Backpacking in Bai Tu Long national park (Ha Long Bay)
👀 For curious travelersnational park ranked #17
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 7, 2026

The first real decision in Bai Tu Long National Park is whether you pay for a quiet, smaller-boat cruise that actually enters the park, or save money on a generic “Ha Long Bay” tour that only skirts its edge; that choice decides if you get limestone wilderness or just a crowded photo stop. Bai Tu Long sits northeast of Ha Long City, in Quang Ninh Province, sharing the same karst seascape but with stricter protection and fewer boats. For backpackers, it’s the calmer, more expensive cousin: gorgeous island-dotted bays, short jungle hikes on select islands, mangroves, and a decent chance of seeing hornbills or macaques, but limited independent access, patchy trails, and higher per-day costs once you factor in mandatory boats and guides. Camping is usually only via organized tours or basic homestays in fishing communities, so it’s not the free-roaming, tent-on-a-ridge experience you’d get in places like Cat Ba National Park or Cuc Phuong. I like it for the silence and the feeling of being far from the party boats, but if you’re counting every dong and want long, DIY hikes, you’ll get more trail for your money elsewhere.

💡 HighlightsPlaces and moments you shouldn't skip

  • Karst islands and limestone scenery — The main reason people come: cathedral-like limestone towers rising from emerald water. Bai Tu Long is quieter than the main Ha Long tourist circuit, so the karsts feel more untouched and you get better light for photos and fewer boats in the frame.
  • Vung Vieng floating fishing village — A real working village on water where you can watch squid drying, local boats moored in tiny lanes, and fishermen hauling nets at dawn. It’s a great slice of local life that feels authentic, not staged for tourists.
  • Cong Do Island & Tra Bau Beach — A short hike from the pier drops you onto a small, clean sandy beach with shallow swimming and a lookout above that gives a classic bay panorama. Good spot for a picnic and to escape the crowds.
  • Mangrove islets and birdlife

  • Mangrove islets and birdlife — The park’s fringes have mangrove channels that attract shorebirds and kingfishers; look for wading birds at low tide and small crabs and mudskippers around roots. Great for quiet paddles or a nature-focused photo session.
  • Hidden lagoons and sea caves for kayaking — Many tours include calm tunnels and tiny lagoons you can paddle into. The feeling of squeezing your kayak into a sheltered pocket of water surrounded by cliffs is special — peaceful and a little adventurous without needing hardcore skills.
  • Snorkeling and marine life — Some sheltered bays around the islands have patches of coral and clear pockets of water where you can spot reef fish, sea cucumbers and occasional starfish. Not as vivid as tropical reefs, but perfectly good for a quick splash and marine spotting.
  • Sunrise from a small island viewpoint — Waking early and climbing a short trail or standing on a quiet boat deck as the bay lights up is my personal favorite. The color, silence and mirror-smooth water make the whole place feel a little magical — and it’s the best time to see birds and fishermen starting their day.
