Backpacking in Mukuni Big 5
👍 Recommendedattraction ranked #9
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

Mukuni Big 5 is best known for its guided walks with habituated elephants, where you stroll alongside the animals and, if the guides offer it, touch them. It sits in Zambia’s Southern Province, a short drive from Livingstone and Victoria Falls, on the Zambezi side near Mukuni Village. The elephant encounter is the reason to come, and it earns its fee because the animals are calm, large and close. The lion walk is the one to weigh up, since not every traveler is comfortable with that kind of contact. Crowds stay small, mostly tour groups on set slots, so getting there is easy by taxi or tour. A first day works well as a morning activity here, then an afternoon at the falls.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #9 attraction in Zambia
Why visitors keep coming back

Mukuni Big 5 gives you what a standard game drive can’t: walking next to elephants at arm’s length, guided by handlers who know each animal by name and mood. That closeness is the pitch, and it delivers for first-timers who have never stood beside something this size. The second reason is location. Because the park is a short hop from Livingstone, you can fit it around the Victoria Falls circuit without rearranging your route. It also sits beside Mukuni Village, so a visit can pair with a look at local life under the Mukuni chieftaincy. Pick the activities that match your comfort level, keep expectations realistic about a managed experience rather than wild safari, and you will leave with photos and a real sense of scale.

💡 HighlightsThe experiences that define the visit

  1. Elephant Interaction Walk: the headline experience. You walk beside habituated elephants with handlers, learn their individual quirks and get close enough to feel skin and hear stomachs rumble.
  2. Elephant Feeding: hand over food and watch the trunk work with surprising delicacy. Great for photos.
  3. Lion Encounter: guided walks with lions are offered here. They are controversial, so think carefully about whether this suits you.
  4. Cheetah Experience: a chance to see these sleek cats up close with guides explaining their speed and behavior.
  5. Game Drive: a drive through the surrounding bush for antelope, giraffe and other wildlife.
  6. Mukuni Village Visit: a short trip next door to see village life, crafts and the local chief’s community.
  7. Zambezi Riverside Views: the nearby river landscape adds a scenic backdrop

Mukuni Big 5 is best started with the elephant walk, because it is the main draw and the animals are calmest and most active early in the day.

🌤️ When to go?Best time to visit Mukuni Big 5

  • Cool Dry Season (May to August): Mornings sit around 8 to 12°C (46 to 54°F) and afternoons reach 24 to 27°C (75 to 81°F), so a village walk is comfortable. Mukuni Big 5 is busiest here, and so is Victoria Falls, but the cultural tours rarely feel packed.
  • Hot Dry Season (September to October): Afternoons climb to 32 to 37°C (90 to 99°F). Go early, since shade is thin and the walk takes the edge off by midday.
  • Rainy Season (November to March): Expect 28 to 32°C (82 to 90°F), humid air and afternoon downpours. Dirt tracks get muddy, though lodging prices drop and the surrounding bush turns green.
  • Shoulder (April): Rains fade, temperatures ease and crowds stay thin.
Book your village visit for a morning slot, when the light is soft and the heat is manageable.

The second option is the Victoria Falls side of Livingstone, nearer the national park gate and the river. It is quieter and a little pricier, with riverside campsites and lodges that suit those wanting nights outdoors. Sleeping in Mukuni village itself is possible through community homestays, but options are limited and best arranged in advance. Whichever area you pick, walk after dark only in the lit central streets and use a taxi for the rest.

We 💚 feedbackFinal thoughts on visiting Mukuni Big 5

Mukuni Big 5 sits right beside Mukuni Village, and many first-timers rush back to the falls without a look. I would set aside an extra hour to walk through the village and buy crafts directly from the makers.
