United States Itinerary Planner

Two weeks, a month, a Tuesday-to-Sunday dash: you set the length, pick what you actually want to see (cities, national parks, hikes, beaches and so on), and choose your own pace. Add a start, an end, or a must-see stop like Grand Canyon National Park, and the route bends around you. Slow and cheap beats fast and frantic for most backpackers, since every extra flight or hurried day costs you money, sleep and the will to smile at a hostel bunk. Your priorities, your pace, minus the spreadsheet.

🙋 FAQThings travelers often ask

Around 14 days gives you a focused trip, 21 days lets you add a second region without rushing, and 30 days is comfortable for a proper backpacking loop. Distances are huge, so fewer bases with more time at each is the cheaper and calmer choice.
Yes, Canada to the north and Mexico to the south both border the United States and are easy to add overland. Canada pairs well with northern trips, and Mexico with the Southwest and California.

Build a multi-country route
Yes. Stops are sequenced to minimize backtracking and grouped by how close they are to each other, and your chosen travel pace (fast, normal, or slow) adjusts how much ground each day covers.
Absolutely. Adjust your trip length, interests, starting point, or travel style and generate a new route in seconds.
Yes, generating and viewing your route is completely free. An offline-friendly PDF version is available as an optional purchase which gives more detailed information for each location on your route.

🗺️ RegionsHow spread out things are

Distances here run large, and the country is far wider than a single trip makes comfortable. Hawaii sits in the middle of the Pacific, while Yellowstone National Park is a long way from the Statue of Liberty, and a map makes that look far more doable than it feels. The planner keeps nearby places together instead of sending you back and forth across the country. That saves the most money and sanity for a backpacker, since every long jump costs a day, a chunk of your budget and some of your good mood.

⚙️ How it worksThe logic behind your route

Pick your trip length, your interests and how fast you like to move, and the planner lines up real places into a day-by-day route. First it groups nearby spots together, so you are not zigzagging across a country that is wider than most people’s patience. Then it picks one sensible direction through those groups, so day nine does not undo day three. Finally, each stop gets time based on what it is and how much sits around it. A city with plenty nearby, say New York City, becomes a base where you unpack once and stay longer, while smaller spots within reach turn into day trips. For a backpacker this is the cheapest, calmest option: fewer packing days, fewer long hauls, and one bed you can actually learn the squeaks of. It beats hopping between single-stop towns, which eats hours and money for very little extra to see.
