Backpacking in Recherche Bay
👀 For curious travelersregion ranked #17
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

Most people come to Recherche Bay for the sheltered anchorages and the walk to South Cape Bay, yet the quiet old-growth forest of the Southport Lagoon area matters just as much. It sits in Tasmania, Australia, south of Hobart. I drove down the Huon Highway, and a pademelon sat in the road at dusk, unmoved by my horn. Driving beats waiting for buses. Your first day could be a slow lap of Cockle Creek and a short beach walk.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #17 region in Australia
What sets this place apart

Recherche Bay works because the road ends here, so you get a Cockle Creek campground where the walking tracks begin and the car park doubles as a wallaby viewing platform. The South Cape Bay track gives you a full coastal day without relocating. History adds weight: French explorers anchored in 1792, and the Recherche Bay Heritage Area keeps that story alive. You can pair bush walking with quiet beaches at a slow pace, and the lack of crowds makes the whole trip feel unhurried.

💡 HighlightsKey sights and experiences for travelers

  1. South Cape Bay Track: a coastal walk from Cockle Creek across buttongrass plains to cliffs facing Antarctica-bound swells.
  2. Cockle Creek: the southernmost point reachable by road in Australia, with a campground and calm water.
  3. Fishers Point Track: an easy 4 km return walk from Cockle Creek along three beaches to the ruins of an 1843 pilot station.
  4. Whale Memorial at Cockle Creek: a reminder of the whaling station history here.
  5. Recherche Bay Heritage Area: the shoreline where French botanists set up a garden in 1792.
  6. Southport Lagoon Conservation Area: walks through heath and quiet beaches, with few visitors.
  7. Southport: a small village with a pub and a jetty, handy before the final stretch.
  8. Hastings Caves State Reserve: dolomite caves and a thermal pool in a forest setting.
  9. Ida Bay Railway: a narrow-gauge

  10. Leprena and Lune River: bush tracks and river flats in the district that most travelers pass in the car.
Most visitors skip the Recherche Bay Heritage Area, though the old French garden site is a good reason to slow down.

⌛️ 5 daysA smart one-week plan

Day 1: Cockle Creek: Do not skip the South Cape Bay Track, so start here. The road is the only practical way in, which sets your pace: you drive, park, and walk. Camp near the water and let the evening wallabies entertain you.
Day 2: Southport: Head back toward the village for supplies and the pub, then walk part of the Southport Lagoon area. Since services thin out south of here, stock up before returning.
Day 3: Hastings Caves: Spend the morning underground and the afternoon in the thermal pool. A detour to the Ida Bay Railway adds a short ride without extra driving.
Day 4: Lune River: Wander the river flats and forest tracks, taking things slowly.
Day 5: Cockle Creek: Return for the heritage shoreline and a last beach walk. If one day justifies the trip, I would choose Day 1 for the cliffs at the end of the track.

🌤️ When to go?Choosing the right time of year

  • Summer (Dec to Feb): Highs of 20 to 22°C (68 to 72°F), lows near 10°C (50°F), and light until about 9 pm. Camping and boat tours are busiest, and cabins book out.
  • Autumn (Mar to May): Days of 15 to 19°C (59 to 66°F), calmer winds, quiet tracks and lower prices.
  • Winter (Jun to Aug): 11 to 13°C (52 to 55°F), cold rain, daylight only about 9 hours, and whale sightings offshore.
  • Spring (Sep to Nov): 14 to 18°C (57 to 64°F), wildflowers, gusty winds and few visitors.
Book summer lodging weeks ahead, or come in March when the water is still swimmable for the hardy.

🛏️ Where to stay?Best areas and accommodation options

Southport is the best base, with a pub, a small general store and a handful of guesthouses and caravan park cabins about 20 minutes from the trailhead at Cockle Creek. It is quiet, safe and friendly, and the evening crowd is mostly hikers and fishers who talk easily. Dover, 30 minutes north, has a beach, a pub and a few more budget beds. Cockle Creek itself has free and low-cost camping beside the bay, and it is the most social spot for walkers heading to the South Coast Track. Huonville, an hour from the bay, has more supermarkets and hostel-style options if you want to stock up.

🚌 Getting aroundTransportation options and practical tips

A bus fare to Recherche Bay does not exist, because no public bus goes there, so your real expense is fuel or a rental, roughly A$60 to 90 a day for a small car plus petrol, paid by card at Hobart airport or city depots. That is the absurd part of this trip: the most remote corner of the southeast is reachable only by wheels you must supply.
  • Rental car: The drive from Hobart takes about 2 to 2.5 hours (roughly 150 km) along the Huon Highway, then the Southport road. It costs the most upfront but gives you the most, since Cockle Creek, Southport and Hastings Caves sit far apart.
  • Shared car or ride-share: Hostel noticeboards in Hobart sometimes turn up lifts, and splitting petrol four ways brings the cost to about A$20 to 30 each. Comfort depends on your companions' playlist.
  • Tour from Hobart:

  • Tour from Hobart: Day tours run about A$150 to 250. They save planning but leave you only a couple of hours on site, which is steep for the time.
  • Bicycle: The roads are hilly and winding with no shoulder in places. It is slow and sweaty, but lovely for fit riders with all day to spare.
Fill your tank in Huonville or Dover, because the last stretch has no fuel at all, and the signal drops out well before Cockle Creek.

🍲 FoodWhat to Eat & Drink

Fresh seafood is the point here: Tasmanian scallops, crayfish and salmon from the Huon channel, often eaten as fish and chips with salty, vinegar-sharp batter at a Dover or Southport counter. In Huonville, farm gates sell apples and cider, crisp and cold. Pubs serve hearty pub meals and local craft beer. Stock groceries before Cockle Creek, as shops are scarce and close early. Locals are relaxed about dress and tipping, and a nod at the bar starts conversations. Cook over a gas stove only, since fires are often banned in summer.

FAQCommon questions from travelers

Two to three days is enough for Recherche Bay and the area around it. Day one covers the drive from Hobart (about 2 hours), Southport and Hastings Caves, and day two suits the walk from Cockle Creek to Fishers Point or Whale Memorial. A third day lets you try the Cockle Creek section of the South Coast Track.
Without a car, getting around is difficult because no public buses reach the bay. You can take a Hobart day tour for roughly A$150 to 250, arrange a shared ride from Hobart's hostels, or cycle the hilly roads from Dover. A rental car at about A$60 to 90 a day is the practical choice.
Recherche Bay is known for Cockle Creek, the southernmost point in Australia you can reach by road, and the start of the South Coast Track. It also holds early French exploration history from the 1790s, whale watching in winter and Hastings Caves, about 40 minutes north. Southern Tasmania's quiet bays and forest tracks attract campers and walkers.

We 💚 feedbackIs it worth it?

Pair Recherche Bay with the Huon Valley orchards and Hobart on a loop, since the road in and out is the same. I would bring a tent and a full tank, and spend two nights rather than rushing back.

✈️ When did I visit Australia?
On my trip to New Zealand in 1993, I had a short stop in Australia as well.
