Tathra Beach is a small surf-and-fishing town beach on the Sapphire Coast of New South Wales, in Australia, not a sheltered resort cove. It sits on the coast road east of Bega, with a long sandy strand and a historic timber wharf. I arrived, parked above the wharf, and found a pelican eyeing my sandwich with total confidence. The swimming is patrolled in summer, the sand is clean, and the cafés are casual. Bring your own groceries, as budget choices are limited.

Nobody here is in a hurry, including the locals fishing off the end of the wharf. A caravan park right near the sand keeps costs sensible, and the cafés and a pub handle the social side without any fuss.

🛏️ Where to stay?Best areas and accommodation options

The village of Tathra itself is the place to stay, because everything sits within a few minutes’ walk of the sand. The streets around the wharf and Bega Street hold the cafes, a pub, a bakery and a small supermarket, so you can eat without a car. The beachfront holiday park at the northern end is the main budget and social base, with camp sites and cabins (roughly A$35 to 60 a night for a site, US$23 to 40) and plenty of other travelers. Cheap rooms are scarce, so in peak season look at Bermagui or Merimbula, each about 30 to 40 minutes away by car.

🛡️ SafetyScams, Hazards, and Annoyances

Tathra is a patrolled, family-friendly surf beach, and the stretch near the surf club is the safest spot to swim. Volunteer lifesavers work it in summer, so swim between the red and yellow flags. Rips form on the open beach, especially after big swells, and the water around the wharf is best left to fishers. Sun is strong from October to March, so bring a rash shirt. Leave valuables locked in the car or hostel rather than on the sand.

Tathra is on the Sapphire Coast of the NSW Far South Coast, about 5 hours by car (roughly 400 km) from Sydney and 2.5 hours from Canberra via the Princes Highway and Bega. Public transport means a train or coach from Sydney to Bega, then a local bus for the 20-minute ride to Tathra. Services are infrequent, so check timetables before you go. Having a car makes exploring easier.
Swimming is the best use of it, with a patrolled beach in summer and calm days common in the morning. Surfing is steady for beginners and intermediates, with beach breaks and a reef break near the headland, and board hire is available in town for about A$30 to 50 a day. Snorkeling is limited and best around the wharf pylons and rocky edges in calm water. Visibility is variable, so Bermagui or Merimbula suit snorkelers better.
Yes, the beach and wharf are free to visit, with no entry fee or ticket. Parking in the village is mostly free, though time limits apply near the main strip. The wharf has a small heritage museum and cafe, and a walk along the headland costs nothing. The only costs are camping or accommodation, and some campground day-use may apply.
