Trilha do Monte Crista sits in the state of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil, inland from the coast near Joinville. The climb is steep and muddy, with Atlantic forest views that justify the sweat. Public transport reaches only the town, so expect a taxi or app ride for the final stretch. I paid about US$2 for a fresh sugarcane juice at the trailhead and drank it in one go.   • Summer (December to March): Hot, humid, 22 to 32°C (72 to 90°F), with afternoon storms and slick rock. Holiday crowds and higher lodging prices in nearby Joinville and São Francisco do Sul.
Start at first light on a winter weekday and you will usually have the summit to yourself.

Rain can arrive within an hour in the Atlantic forest, so start early and turn back if clouds close in on the upper rock. Wear shoes with real grip, carry at least 2 liters of water, and pack a headlamp. Trail markings are decent but fade in places, so download an offline map. Insects are common, so bring repellent.
