Backpacking in Trilha do Monte Crista
👀 For curious travelershike ranked #17
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated September 4, 2026

You have to choose at Monte Crista: push for the summit in one punishing day or slow down, camp, and let the mountain work on you. That choice matters, because this trail in Garuva, northern Santa Catarina, is short on distance but big on steep, sweaty effort. The path climbs hard through Atlantic Forest, then suddenly spits you onto open rock with wide coastal views and, on clear days, a sea of clouds that makes the grind worth it. Access by public transport is awkward compared with Serra do Mar classics near Curitiba, and the trail is rougher and less polished than Brazil’s famous postcard hikes, but that rawness is exactly why I’d come back.

  1. The Crest Summit (Crista) — The narrow ridge that gives the trail its name delivers a raw, 360° panorama: valleys, distant towns and the patchwork of farmland below. It’s the most dramatic bit of exposed rock on the route, a place that feels properly wild and a little daring when the wind picks up. (Personal favorite — best place to pause and breathe it all in.)
  2. Main Viewpoint at Dawn or Dusk — Whether you catch sunrise or sunset here, the light sculpts the landscape and turns ordinary hills into dramatic silhouettes. Photographers love it, but even if you’re not shooting, the quiet shift in temperature and light makes the walk feel like a reward rather than a hike.

  3. Rock Gardens and Scramble Sections — Short stretches of weathered granite and stacked boulders break the monotony of the trail and invite a bit of scrambling. The textures and little natural alcoves are fun to explore and give the hike that “adventure” feel without needing ropes or special gear.
  4. Patches of Native Forest and Flora — Small pockets of native vegetation, bromeliads and orchids (depending on season) pop up between rockier sections. These green pockets attract birds and insects, so you’ll often hear more than you see — a nice contrast to the exposed summit.
  5. Rural Landscapes and Local Trails — The trail weaves past small farm clearings, stone walls and faint cattle tracks used by locals; you get a good snapshot of countryside life. It’s not a cultural museum, but those human touches make the hike feel lived-in and approachable — handy if you need water or directions from someone en route.
