Backpacking in Trilha do Pico Paraná
👌 Worth visitinghike ranked #15
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 25, 2026

You have to choose, before you even lace your boots: carry camping gear and sleep high on the ridge, or push a brutal day-hike and race the daylight back down. That decision shapes everything on Trilha do Pico Paraná, in the Serra do Mar range of Paraná state, between Curitiba and the coast in southern Brazil. The trail is gorgeous and punishing: slick roots, muddy scrambles, steel cables, and constant up, but also cloud seas rolling over jungle, knife-edge ridges, and a sunrise that makes every thigh-burning step feel earned. It’s long and steep, harder than nearby Caratuva or Itapiroca, and far more serious than the touristy walks around Curitiba. Public transport gets you vaguely close, but the last stretch usually needs a transfer or hitch, which keeps crowds down but raises the commitment level in a very real way.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #15 hike in Brazil
The unique appeal for travelers

The Trilha do Pico Paraná is a magnet for backpackers craving a challenge that rewards with jaw-dropping views. This hike packs a serious scenery-to-effort ratio punch. You’ll sweat it out on steep ascents, but the payoff? A panoramic vista that stretches for miles, making every labored breath worth it.

Access is a breeze via public transport, dropping you right at the trailhead without breaking the bank. The trail offers flexible distances, allowing you to tailor your adventure to your energy levels. Whether you’re in for a quick day hike or a multi-day trek, it fits seamlessly into a longer backpacking route through Brazil’s lush landscapes.

💡 HighlightsEssential experiences to have while hiking the Trilha do Pico Paraná

  1. Summit (Pico Paraná) — The main draw: the highest point in southern Brazil (around 1,877 m) with a sweeping 360° panorama of the Serra do Mar and, on really clear days, glimpses of the coast. It’s the classic “you made it” moment — sunrise up here is cinematic and is my personal favorite for the light and silence before the crowds arrive.
  2. Exposed granite ridge and scrambles — Sections of bare rock and short hands-on moves give the trail an alpine feel you don’t get on many Brazilian hikes. The ridge offers dramatic drop-offs and photo frames that make the effort feel properly earned.
  3. Mossy Atlantic Forest and high-elevation flora — The hike winds through dense, old-growth Atlantic Forest full of epiphytes, orchids and bromeliads; higher up you’ll find stunted trees and occasional araucaria

  3. Mossy Atlantic Forest and high-elevation flora — The hike winds through dense, old-growth Atlantic Forest full of epiphytes, orchids and bromeliads; higher up you’ll find stunted trees and occasional araucaria fragments. That contrast — jungle turning into windswept scrub — is what makes the route visually special.
  4. Streams, cascades and natural pools — Lower slopes have clear mountain streams and small waterfalls that are perfect for cooling off, filtering water, or breaking for lunch. They’re practical (water + shade) and pretty — great little micro-ecosystems along the way.
  5. Wildlife encounters and morning chorus — Expect to hear bugios (howler monkeys), see colorful tanagers and toucans, and catch amphibian life near the streams. The dawn chorus here is memorable — it’s one of those places where sound adds as much to the experience as the view.

🌤️ When to go?Best time to hike the Trilha do Pico Paraná

  • Weather: The dry season from April to September is your best bet. Trails stay firm, and rain won’t turn your boots into mud magnets. Avoid the wet season (October to March) when downpours can flood paths and cloud the views.

  • Temperature: Expect daytime highs around 20-25°C (68-77°F) during the dry months—cool enough to keep you moving without overheating. Nights dip to 10-15°C (50-59°F), so pack layers for the summit chill.

  • Daylight Hours: Longer days in the dry season give you more daylight to tackle the 8-10 hour hike without rushing. Sunrise starts around 6:00 AM, sunset near 5:30 PM—plan to hit the trail early to soak in the full experience.

  • Crowds: Peak hiking season aligns with Brazilian winter holidays (July), so expect more hikers then. For solitude, aim for shoulder months

  • Seasonal Activities: Dry season also means clearer skies for stargazing atop Pico Paraná. Plus, local festivals in nearby towns can add cultural spice if you time your trip right.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and guide fees spike during July and August. Booking outside these months can save you cash and hassle.

Pro-tip: Start your hike at dawn during the dry season to catch the sunrise from the summit—nothing beats that first light after the grind.
