Backpacking in President Figueiredo
👀 For curious travelerstown ranked #26
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 29, 2026

President Figueiredo is not for anyone who wants big-city nightlife, polished infrastructure, or easy, air‑conditioned comfort. But if you’re backpacking the Amazon and want waterfalls, jungle trails, and cold river pools without committing to a full expedition, it quietly overdelivers. A few hours north of Manaus in Amazonas state, it works best as a nature base: you sleep in town, then spend your days bumping along muddy roads to cascades, caves, and swimming spots that feel half‑forgotten. The town itself is simple and a bit rough around the edges, more practical than pretty, with low‑rise streets, basic eateries, and evenings that wind down early. You can reach it by bus or shared car from Manaus, then mostly rely on tours, mototaxis, or hitching to reach the sights; the center is walkable, but the good stuff is scattered. Hostels and pousadas are modest yet social enough that you usually find a waterfall buddy over breakfast, though it’s far quieter and more local than Manaus or touristy river lodges. Costs are lower than in the capital, but you pay in comfort: patchy ATMs, simple food, and the usual Amazon realities of heat, insects, and sudden storms. For a few days, though, it’s a rewarding detour—less intense than deep‑jungle trips, more immersive and scenic than just staying in Manaus.

  • Praça da Matriz (main town square) — Not a waterfall, but the cultural pulse: visit on market days to meet locals, try regional snacks, and see small craft stalls and the municipal church that anchor town life.
  • Mercado Municipal de Presidente Figueiredo — The best place to sample local produce, fish and handmade goods; low-key, noisy, and the real way to understand daily life beyond tourist brochures.
  • Casa de Cultura / Centro Cultural — Small exhibits, rotating local-art shows and occasional performances that give context to the municipality’s history and riverine traditions.
  • Balneário Municipal (public river/bathing area) — An easy-access riverside spot where families swim, vendors sell cold drinks and you can relax in shallower water; handy if you want a quick, safe dip without a long trip.
  • Trilha e Cachoeira do Santuário — A compact trail that leads to a waterfall and viewpoints; the trail is maintained enough for casual hikers and gives good combination of forest, birdwatching and the payoff of a secluded fall.
A few nice day-trip options just outside town: the Anavilhanas Archipelago (boat trips and river wildlife), Manaus for Teatro Amazonas and the markets, and the Novo Airão area for pink dolphin/river tours—my personal favorite for a day trip is the Anavilhanas Archipelago.

  • Walking: The best way to absorb the town’s pulse—quiet streets, local markets, and the scent of tropical blooms. Distances are short, and walking lets you catch the small details that buses miss.

  • Local Vans (Lotação): Shared vans run irregularly from early morning until late afternoon, costing just a few reais. They’re cramped but fast, darting through the town’s narrow roads with a local’s urgency.

  • Motorcycle Taxis: Available throughout the day, these are your go-to for quick hops or reaching trailheads outside town. Expect to negotiate fares upfront; rides are cheap but bumpy.

  • Regular Bus Service: Limited schedules, usually morning and late afternoon, connecting to Manaus and nearby villages. Tickets are affordable, but don’t expect luxury—think basic seats and open windows.

  • Basic Activities/Entry Fees: The main draw is nature—waterfalls, caves, and hiking trails. Entry fees to parks or guided tours range from $5 to $15 USD. Some waterfalls have small local charges to maintain trails, usually under $3 USD. Independent trekking is free but requires good preparation.
  • Miscellaneous Expenses: Bottled water, snacks, and occasional gear rentals add up to about $2 to $5 USD daily. Internet access is spotty; buying a local SIM card with data costs around $10 USD for a basic plan, which can stretch over several days.

All told, you’re looking at roughly $25 to $45 USD per day to cover the essentials without cutting corners. This town rewards patience and a bit of planning—embrace the slower pace, and you’ll find the costs match the unhurried rhythm of the jungle around you.
⚠️ Prices can change and everyone travels differently, so take this as a rough guide. Hope it helps you plan your adventure!

2. Gruta do Rei do Mato
Just 20 minutes away, this cave system offers a fascinating glimpse into the region’s geology. The entrance is unassuming, but inside, you’ll find impressive stalactites and stalagmites. Guided tours are available for about R$15, and they’re worth it for the insights into the cave’s history. The best time to visit is early morning when the light filters in beautifully. Don’t rush; take your time to explore the nooks and crannies. Many backpackers miss the chance to ask questions during the tour, so engage with your guide.

3. Parque Nacional de Anavilhanas
A bit further afield, about an hour’s drive, this national park is a sprawling wonderland of islands and waterways. Rent a canoe or join a guided boat tour for around R$50. The wildlife is rich here; keep your eyes peeled for pink dolphins and exotic birds. The dry season is ideal for exploring the waterways, as the water levels drop, revealing more islands. A common mistake is underestimating the time needed to navigate the park, so plan for a full day of exploration.

Each of these trips offers a unique perspective on the Amazon, making your stay in President Figueiredo not just a stopover, but a gateway to adventure.
