- Heavenly Lake (Tianchi) — Bogda Peak area
Alpine lake tucked into the eastern Tianshan above Ürümqi, clear turquoise water ringed by pine forest and craggy peaks. Take the cable car for instant panorama, hike the lake rim to see glaciers and alpine meadows, and feel why locals treat it as the mountain heart of Xinjiang. - Bogda Peak and Bogda Nature Reserve
The dramatic eastern-Tianshan massif behind Heavenly Lake — high alpine ridges, glaciers, glacier-fed streams and remote shepherd valleys. Serious trekkers and nature lovers come for wildflower meadows, ice-fields and relatively intact wildlife habitat that you won’t find beside China’s lowland parks. - Sayram Lake
Northern Tianshan’s largest alpine lake, windswept and big-sky beautiful with steppe and conifer slopes. Less crowded

Northern Tianshan’s largest alpine lake, windswept and big-sky beautiful with steppe and conifer slopes. Less crowded than Tianchi, it offers shoreline walks, horseback rides with Kazakh herders and spectacular sunset reflections that feel quintessentially Tianshan. - Nalati (Narat) Grassland — Tekes County
Broad high-altitude grassland ringed by Tianshan peaks where Kazakh nomad culture is alive: yurt stays, horse games, seasonal migrations and endless riding country. This is my personal favorite — easy to reach, huge skies, and an authentic nomad vibe you can join for a night or a week. - Guozigou (Guozi Gully) Scenic Pass — hidden gem
A dramatic mountain pass and gorge near Yining with waterfalls, pine forests and relatively short, rewarding hikes. Locals picnic here; most overseas tourists skip it, so you get quiet trails and great photo ops without the crowds. - Yining (Ghulja) & the Ili River Valley cultural circuit — hidden gem
Multi-ethnic frontier town at the northern flanks of the Tianshan where Uyghur, Kazakh, Hui and Han markets mix. Hit the Sunday bazaars, sample Ili lamb and dairy delicacies, stroll the riverside poplar avenues — a living cultural crossroads you won’t get from guidebooks alone. - Zhaosu County grasslands and alpine valleys — hidden gem
Lesser-known pastures and valleys west of Nalati where Kazakh and Kyrgyz-style village life persists, with seasonal flower meadows, remote dirt-road drives and homestay options. Locals use it as a quieter alternative to Nalati; photographers and slow travelers love it.
