Backpacking in Risnjak
👍 Recommendednational park ranked #9
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated September 4, 2026

Most people online sell Risnjak as “just a quiet forest park,” but the reality is that its main ridge can feel more like a small, exposed alpine range than a woodland stroll. Sitting in Croatia’s Gorski Kotar, between Rijeka and the Slovenian border, it’s cooler, wetter, and emptier than Plitvice or Paklenica, with cheaper entrance fees and far fewer tour buses. Trails are well-marked but steep, weather turns fast, and wildlife is serious—bears, lynx, wolves you’ll probably never see but should absolutely respect. Access without a car is awkward, and camping is restricted to official spots and a few basic mountain huts, so it’s not the place for casual wild-camp fantasies. I like it for the silence and the ridge views over Kvarner Bay, but if you want waterfalls and easy photos, Plitvice wins; if you want dramatic rock and technical routes, Paklenica is the better playground.

💡 HighlightsEssential experiences to have while exploring Risnjak

  • Veliki Risnjak summit — The obvious must-see: a rewarding hike up to the main peak with wide rocky viewpoints. On a clear day you get big panoramas over Gorski Kotar, the Adriatic islands in the distance, and the neighbouring Alps; classic mountain vibe without technical climbing.
  • Primeval beech forests — Thick, mossy old beech stands that feel properly ancient. These forests are great for easy, atmospheric walks, amazing in autumn, and they host a lot of understory life — fungi, birds and the slower rhythms of the mountain.
  • Wildlife watching (especially the lynx) — The park gets its name from the lynx (ris) and is one of the better places in Croatia to hear about big mammals. Brown bears, deer, wild boar and raptors are part of the mix too; early morning or dusk are the best times to

  • Karst features and mountain streams — Expect limestone outcrops, sinkholes and clear, fast-flowing streams that cut through the woods. Small waterfalls and spring-fed pools make for pleasant stops and good photo opportunities.
  • Ridgeline hikes and marked trail network — Trails are well marked and usable for anything from short nature walks to full-day ridge treks. There are a few simple mountain huts/shelters along routes, so you can keep it a budget overnight or do a long day and sleep in Delnice.
  • Panoramic viewpoints and meadows — Scattered alpine meadows break up the forest and give you sudden wide views. They’re great for a picnic, catching wildflowers in summer, and seeing the contrast between dense woods and open ridges.
