Many people keep a rural homestead alongside town work, so towns empty on weekends and around ceremonies such as Umhlanga and Incwala.

The country is divided into four altitude zones, so a short drive changes climate and landscape. Infrastructure is good for its size: paved main roads, reliable minibus (kombi) networks and widespread mobile coverage. There is no rail passenger service and no domestic flights worth using.
