Yes, the Faroe Islands are easy to backpack independently: English is widely spoken, crime is very low, and buses and ferries run on one national timetable. Cost and weather are the real hurdles, not logistics.
From Vágar Airport, bus 300 reaches
Tórshavn in about 50 minutes for around DKK 90 (US$13). Dorm beds in the capital run roughly DKK 300 to 450 (US$45 to 65), and camping is limited to official campsites. Popular trails on private land, such as Trælanípa,
Kallur and
Mykines, charge landowner fees of about DKK 100 to 300 (US$15 to 45), and some require advance booking in summer.
Four to five days is the right amount of time for the Faroe Islands, enough to see the main islands while leaving room for fog and canceled boats. A week lets you add Suðuroy or Nólsoy.
Two days covers
Vágar and
Mykines from the airport. Three days adds
Tórshavn, the
Vestmanna Cliffs and
Gjógv. Five days reaches
Klaksvík and the
Kallur Lighthouse on Kalsoy as well. Road distances are short (Tórshavn to Klaksvík is about 1 hour), but swell regularly cancels the Mykines ferry, so keep one flexible day for every four or five you plan.
Yes, you can get around the Faroe Islands without a car, though you will see fewer villages per day. The blue intercity buses and the public ferries reach almost every inhabited island, and the red city buses in Tórshavn are free.
Bus 300 links the airport and
Tórshavn in about 50 minutes, bus 100 reaches Vestmanna in roughly 40 minutes, and bus 400 gets to
Klaksvík in 1 to 1.5 hours. Ferries run to Nólsoy (20 minutes), Mykines (45 minutes, summer only) and Suðuroy (about 2 hours). Saksun has only a seasonal bus, and the Slættaratindur trailhead has none. A rental car costs about DKK 600 to 1,000 (US$90 to 150) a day.
The must-visits in the Faroe Islands are
Mykines for puffins,
Gásadalur for its clifftop waterfall, and the
Kallur Lighthouse on Kalsoy for the view along the island’s northern cliffs.
Add
Saksun and its tidal lagoon, the gorge harbor at
Gjógv, and a two-hour boat trip under the
Vestmanna Cliffs (about DKK 450 to 550, or US$65 to 80). Give
Tórshavn at least half a day for Tinganes and the national art museum. Mykines, Gásadalur and the Trælanípa walk to Bøsdalafossur fit into two days from the airport, while Kallur needs a night in Klaksvík and the 20-minute Kalsoy ferry.
If you are short on time in the Faroe Islands, skip Suðuroy and the far south first, because Tvøroyri is about 2 hours each way by ferry from Tórshavn and needs at least one night.
Runavík and
Fuglafjørður are pleasant working towns on Eysturoy, but they have little that Gjógv or Klaksvík lack.
Sandavágur Beach can wait until you have a free hour near the airport, and the National Theatre only matters if a show is on during your visit. Keep
Tórshavn to half a day, and give the time you save to Mykines, Kalsoy or the Vestmanna Cliffs.
