Backpacking Lithuania: A 5-Day Guide

By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated September 5, 2026
This 5-day loop is for travelers who want a deep, varied slice of Lithuania—cities, dunes, forests, and heavy history—at a medium pace that still leaves time for coffee breaks and sunset walks. You’ll rely on trains and buses between hubs, plus local buses and walking for national parks and beaches, linking Vilnius, Kaunas, and the Baltic coast with a focus on character over box-ticking.

Days 1-2: Vilnius stories - towers, trauma, and creative edges

Start with two nights in Vilnius so you can actually feel the city instead of just passing through. On day one, climb the Vilnius Cathedral Bell Tower for the classic red-roof panorama, then walk down into the darker chapters at the Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights, where the preserved KGB cells and personal stories make the Soviet era hit hard. Balance that weight with a visit to the MO Museum, where contemporary art and design show how the country has been rewriting its identity, and leave time to simply wander the Old Town lanes.

On day two, keep the pace looser: explore more of Vilnius’s backstreets, then cross the river to the Užupis Art Incubator and Gallery Spaces, where studios, murals, and a self-declared “republic” give you a playful, bohemian counterpoint to the previous day’s history, all reachable on foot or by short local bus rides.

Day 3: Kaunas fortresses, devils, and river moods

On day three, ride a train or bus to Kaunas, a comfortable half-day shift that avoids back-to-back long hauls while still changing the scenery. Head straight to the Kaunas Ninth Fort Museum, where the fortress walls and memorials confront you with both Nazi and Soviet atrocities, making it one of the most sobering but important stops in the country. After that, lighten the mood without losing the thread of culture at the Devil’s Museum, a quirky collection of devil figures from around the world that turns folklore and satire into something oddly insightful. Spend the rest of your time wandering Kaunas’s central streets and riverfront, letting the city’s interwar architecture and café life sink in before an easy evening.

Day 4: Nemunas loops and castle country

On day four, leave your big bag in Kaunas or move lightly and head into the green bends of the Nemunas Loops Regional Park Trail, using a short bus ride to reach the trail area without chewing up the whole morning. Walk a manageable section of the Nemunas Loops Regional Park Trail, where forest paths, river viewpoints, and small settlements give you a calm, rural counterweight to the cities, then continue on toward the Panemunė Castle Trail area. Here, a gentle hike around the Panemunė Castle Trail lets you mix low-key walking with castle views and river scenery, before returning to Kaunas for the night so you avoid a late, tiring transfer.

Day 5: Baltic gateway - Klaipėda and the Curonian Spit

On day five, take a morning train or bus to Klaipėda, giving yourself a final day that leans coastal rather than urban. From Klaipėda, hop on the short ferry and local bus into Curonian Spit National Park, where the Curonian Spit itself becomes your main playground of shifting dunes, pine forests, and long sandy stretches. Focus your time around the Nida Beach area, walking the shoreline and nearby paths instead of trying to cover the entire spit, and let the Baltic wind and wide horizons wash away the heaviness of the historical sites you’ve seen. In the late afternoon or evening, return to Klaipėda for your onward journey, closing out a five-day arc that connects Lithuania’s intellectual, emotional, and natural sides without ever feeling like a race.
If you ever push deeper along this coast, slip inland to the quiet lagoon-side village of Dreverna, where old fishing boats, reed beds, and a tiny harbor viewpoint give you a peaceful, low-key finale far from any tour bus route.

🙋 FAQCommon Questions

Lithuania is very easy to backpack independently, especially if you’ve done any travel in Europe before. English is widely spoken by younger people, buses and trains are straightforward, and prices are still friendly compared with Western Europe, so you can wing it a bit without destroying your budget.

The country feels safe, hostels exist in every major stop, and you can usually book accommodation and intercity buses online the night before. Just remember that outside the main cities things get quieter and more local, so it helps to download offline maps and learn a few basic Lithuanian phrases for shops and older folks.
If you’re moving fast, you can get a good feel for Lithuania in 4–5 days, hitting Vilnius, Trakai, and either Kaunas or the coast. That’s enough for a city hit, a castle-on-a-lake day, and one extra flavor of the country.

If you have 7–10 days, it gets much better: you can add the Curonian Spit, a slower day or two in Kaunas, and maybe a small town or national park. More than 10 days only makes sense if you want to really slow down, hike, or use Lithuania as a chilled base between bigger trips.
You can absolutely get around Lithuania without a car, and for backpackers it’s usually the smarter move. Trains link Vilnius, Kaunas, and Klaipėda cheaply and reliably, and buses fill in almost every gap, including Trakai and smaller towns.

The only time a car really helps is if you want to hop between tiny villages or trailheads in one day. For everything on a classic backpacker route, public transport plus the occasional rideshare or taxi from a station is enough, and it keeps your costs and stress down.
If it’s your first time, Vilnius is non‑negotiable: the Old Town, the bar-filled side streets, and the mix of churches and street art give you a lot of Lithuania in one compact package. From there, Trakai is the perfect day trip, with its island castle and lakeside walks that feel like a reset from city life.

For a second base, I’d pick either Kaunas for its interwar architecture, café culture, and cheaper, more local feel, or Klaipėda + the Curonian Spit if you want dunes, pine forests, and Baltic Sea beaches. With a week, doing Vilnius, Trakai, Kaunas, and the Curonian Spit gives you a very complete snapshot without rushing.
If you’re short on time, you can skip smaller towns that repeat the same vibe you’ll already get in Vilnius and Kaunas. Places like Šiauliai are interesting if you’re slow-traveling, but they don’t add much for a tight backpacking itinerary compared with the big three: Vilnius, Kaunas, and the coast.

You can also skip deep countryside wandering unless you’re specifically into hiking or rural homestays; it’s pleasant but not essential if you only have a few days. If you’re really squeezed, prioritize Vilnius + Trakai and then choose either Kaunas or the Curonian Spit, not both, so you’re enjoying the trip instead of just collecting train tickets.
Yes, our itinerary-planner does exactly that. Set your trip length in days, give your interests and travel style, optionally give start- and end location and/or some mandatory stops you would like to include and the itinerary planner creates your personalized routes for Lithuania in seconds.
