- Stargazing, solitude and occasional bioluminescence — compared with beaches closer to the city, Karekare stays darker and quieter, so clear nights can produce excellent stargazing and Milky Way photos. On rare occasions you can see bioluminescent plankton lighting the surf; it’s unpredictable, but when it happens it’s unforgettable (and tide-aware, please).
