Kiwi, the flightless bird, is active in daylight on Stewart Island, and on Ocean Beach near Oban you can sometimes see one probing the sand for sandhoppers at dusk. Rakiura National Park covers about 85 percent of Stewart Island, which lies south of the South Island of New Zealand across Foveaux Strait. I walked a short track out of Oban expecting silence and found the forest loud with tūī and bellbirds, and the air smelled of wet moss. That density of birdlife exists because the island has no stoats, ferrets or weasels, so ground and canopy species survive in numbers the mainland rarely sees. The cost is mud: tracks are wet and rooty, and sandflies thrive. Trails are well marked, crowds are thin, and the vibe is quiet. Book your ferry and any hut passes before arriving.

Backpackers come for the Rakiura Track and North West Circuit, a network of well-serviced huts and campsites that lets you plan a self-guided trip of one night or ten days without paying for a guide. The tracks are marked, the huts have bunks and heaters, and you carry your own food and sleeping bag, which keeps the experience independent. The second draw is wildlife. Because the island is free of stoats, southern brown kiwi are active even in daylight, and bellbirds, tūī and kākā are loud around Oban. Few places let you see a kiwi without a night tour. Many walkers also like that the park is compact enough that a short day walk from town and a multiday tramp can fit one trip, so you can adjust plans when the weather turns, which on this island it often does.

🌤️ When to go?Weather, crowds, and seasonal trade-offs

  • Summer (December to February): Highs reach 16 to 20°C (61 to 68°F) and daylight runs close to 16 hours, so long tramping days are easy. Huts on the Rakiura Track and Great Walk book out months ahead, and ferry seats fill.
  • Autumn (March to May): Highs of 11 to 16°C (52 to 61°F), calmer spells, and far fewer people on the tracks. Hut prices drop once the Great Walk season ends in April.
  • Winter (June to August): Highs of 8 to 11°C (46 to 52°F), about 9 hours of daylight, and mud on every track. Aurora displays are possible on clear nights.
  • Spring (September to November): Highs of 11 to 15°C (52 to 59°F), strong wind, and active birdsong. Kiwi are visible year-round, but long dark winter nights favor viewing.
Rain falls on roughly 250 days a year, so pick your dates for hut availability and pack for wet weather in any month.

🛡️ SafetyStaying Safe: What Travelers Should Know

Rakiura is well managed on its Great Walk, but the backcountry is muddy, remote and wet. Weather changes fast, with strong wind and cold rain possible even in summer, so carry waterproofs and warm layers in a dry bag. Tracks beyond the Rakiura Track are rough, with deep mud, tree roots and tidal stream crossings. Check tide tables and rain forecasts before heading into the Northwest Circuit or Southern Circuit, and expect slow progress of 1 to 2 km per hour in places. Bring waterproof boots and gaiters. Wildlife is mostly harmless, but sea lions can be aggressive on beaches, so keep 10 meters away. Kiwi are protected, so use red light only. Register your intentions with DOC and carry a personal locator beacon, since mobile coverage is patchy outside Oban.
