Backpacking in Donsol
👍 Recommendedtown ranked #7
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 27, 2026

Everyone comes to Donsol for one thing: whale sharks. But the real reason Donsol matters is how it makes you earn that encounter—the early-morning harbor haze, the salt on your lips in a small bangka, the way the town forces you to slow down between boat trips. Donsol sits in Sorsogon province in southern Luzon, a few hours by bus or van from Legazpi, feeling instantly smaller and sleepier than that city’s malls and volcano views. The town itself is simple: a spread-out main road, sari-sari stores, a riverside where kids play at dusk. It’s more launchpad than destination, a base for whale shark trips and firefly cruises rather than urban exploring. You’ll walk some, but you’ll rely on tricycles. Nights are quiet, social life clusters around a handful of guesthouses and homestays, and you’ll meet other backpackers in season but not in big-party numbers. It’s cheaper than big-name beach towns, basic but generally safe, and best treated as a purposeful detour, not your long-stay hub.

  • Topic: Temperature — Daytime temps hover around 28-32°C (82-90°F) in the dry months, warm but bearable with sea breezes. The wet season feels hotter and more humid, pushing 30-34°C (86-93°F), which can sap your energy on hikes or boat trips.

  • Topic: Crowds — Peak season (December to March) draws more tourists, especially around holidays. This means busier tours and higher prices but also a livelier atmosphere. Off-peak months offer solitude but risk weather disruptions.

  • Topic: Seasonal Activities — Whale shark season peaks from February to May, when these gentle giants gather near the coast. Outside this window, marine life watching is less reliable, so plan accordingly if that’s your main draw.

  • Topic: Price Fluctuations — Expect higher rates for accommodation and tours during peak whale shark season and holidays. Booking early can lock in better deals, while the rainy months offer lower prices but fewer guarantees on activities.

Pro-tip: Aim for late February to April—weather is solid, whale sharks are plentiful, and the crowds haven’t fully arrived. You get the best mix of comfort, spectacle, and value.

  • Walking: The core way to get around Donsol’s compact town center. Streets are sandy and shaded by coconut palms, with the scent of grilled seafood wafting through the air. Walking is free, naturally, and lets you soak in the laid-back vibe, but be ready for uneven paths and occasional stray dogs.

  • Tricycles: The local workhorse for short hops, these motorbike-sidecar combos are everywhere. Expect to pay around 20-50 PHP depending on distance. They run from early morning until about 9 PM, offering a quick, bumpy ride through the town’s narrow lanes. Perfect for when you want to save time but still feel the wind and hear the town’s pulse.

  • Jeepneys: For trips beyond the town center, jeepneys are your budget-friendly option. They run on flexible schedules, often leaving when full, so timing is loose but frequent. Fares hover around 10-20 PHP. The ride is noisy and colorful, with open windows letting in the humid air and the occasional burst of local music from the driver’s radio.

  • Boat Transfers: Essential if you’re heading out for whale shark tours or island hopping. Boats leave early, around 6 AM, to catch the calm seas and the best light for spotting marine life. Prices vary but expect to pay about 500-700 PHP for a tour. The ride can be rough if the sea is choppy, so bring a light jacket and a sense of adventure.
