Backpacking in Sorsogon City
👌 Worth visitingcity ranked #22
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 27, 2026

You land in Sorsogon City and the first big fork hits: do you burn time chasing cheap, slow jeepneys to reach beaches and whale-shark country, or pay for trikes and vans so you actually see things before dark? That trade-off matters here. Sorsogon City sits at the southern tip of Luzon in the Bicol region, a gateway more than a headliner. It’s friendly, low-key, and cheap, with a walkable center, a few old churches, and a bayside vibe, but nightlife is sleepy and you won’t find a big backpacker scene like in Legazpi or Donsol. I like it as a base to rest, eat Bicolano food, and reset between more dramatic stops, not as the main attraction.

💡 HighlightsPlaces and moments you shouldn't skip

  • Sorsogon Cathedral (Saints Peter and Paul Parish) — The city’s main church: big, central, and full of local rhythm. Whether you catch mass or just admire the old altar and stained glass, it’s a good place to feel the community heartbeat and local religious traditions.
  • Rizal Boulevard / Sorsogon Baywalk — Sunset walks, street food, fishermen hauling in the day’s catch and locals hanging out on benches. It’s the easiest — and most honest — way to experience Sorsogon’s seaside vibe without leaving town.
  • Sorsogon Provincial Capitol & Museum — The capitol compound is a photo-worthy civic landmark, and the small provincial museum nearby collects artifacts and stories that explain local history and Bicolano culture. Good if you want context for what you see around the city.

  • Sorsogon City Public Market — Early-morning energy, mounds of seafood, and cheap local snacks. Perfect for budget travelers who like to eat where the locals eat and score fresh ingredients for a picnic or a cheap, unforgettable meal.
  • Burgos Street / Old Town Stroll — Walkable old-town lanes with a mix of ancestral houses, small shops and cafes. Not flashy, but it’s where you pick up the city’s texture: architecture, sari-sari stores, and everyday life moving at Bicol pace.
  • Sorsogon Fishport / Waterfront Fishing Piers — Active fishing docks where boats land, fish are auctioned, and you can watch the working harbor in action. Great for photography and for tasting the freshest seafood in the city’s tiny eateries.
  • People’s Park & City Plaza — The city’s green heart where locals gather, bands sometimes play, and festivals spill over. Handy place to rest between walks and to see community life up close—parents, vendors, kids with ice cream and all.
  • SM City Sorsogon (local mall hub) — Not glamorous, but hugely practical: cheap eats, reliable Wi-Fi, a cinema, and a good place to shelter when the weather’s wild. For budget travelers it’s a convenient base for logistics and errands.
  • Local Cafés and Bakeries along Rizal/Burgos — Small, family-run cafés that serve Bicolanos’ coffee, snacks and local sweet breads. They’re low-key but culturally useful stops for conversation, people-watching and trying regional flavors without breaking the bank.
  • Community Festivals & Street Fairs (check the calendar) — Sorsogon’s best experiences are often temporary: patronal fiestas, food fairs, or cultural shows in the plaza. Timing matters—if your trip lines up with a local festival, you’ll see the city at its liveliest and most authentic.
A few day-trip highlights outside the city: Donsol for whale-shark encounters, Bulusan Volcano Natural Park for crater lakes and short treks (my personal favorite), and Matnog for island-hopping and beaches — all easily doable from Sorsogon City.

🚌 Getting aroundMoving around without the hassle

Sorsogon City moves with a rhythm that’s part laid-back provincial charm, part bustling hub. It’s not a place where you’ll find trains running like clockwork or a subway map that looks like a circuit board. Instead, expect a flow that’s more organic—jeepneys and tricycles weaving through streets with a mix of local intuition and occasional honking impatience. Time here bends around the needs of the people, not the other way around. Your choices between speed, cost, and comfort will shape how you experience the city’s pulse.

  • Walking: The ultimate budget option. Sorsogon’s compact downtown means many key spots are within a 20-30 minute stroll. Zero cost, full control, and the best way to soak in local life, but it’s weather-dependent and slower than any vehicle.

  • Jeepneys: The backbone of local transit. Runs roughly from 5:30 AM to 9 PM, fares hover around 10-15 PHP. They’re cheap and frequent but can get cramped and slow during rush hours. Comfort is minimal, but the cultural immersion is high.

  • Tricycles: Short hops with a bit more comfort and flexibility. Available almost anytime, fares vary by distance but expect 20-50 PHP. Faster than walking and more direct than jeepneys, though negotiating price is part of the game.

  • Motorcycle Taxis: For when time is tight and you’re willing to pay a premium. Speeds up your travel significantly, fares start around 50 PHP. Not for the faint-hearted—comfort and safety trade off for speed.

  • City Transport Pass: There’s no formal city transport pass, but budgeting around $2 to $3 per day for multiple rides keeps you flexible without overspending.
  • Basic Activities/Entry Fees: Most local attractions, like parks or small museums, charge nominal fees around $0.50 to $2. Nature spots might be free or ask for a small donation. This keeps your adventure affordable while still rewarding exploration.
  • Miscellaneous Expenses: Budget $1 to $3 for things like bottled water, snacks, or occasional treats. These small costs add up but are manageable with a bit of planning.

Altogether, you’re looking at a daily budget between $15 and $25 for a no-frills but comfortable backpacking experience in Sorsogon City. This range lets you balance saving money with enjoying the city’s offerings without feeling squeezed. The key is embracing local transport and food, which deliver authentic experiences at a fraction of tourist prices.
